I’m curious why more non-US citizens interested in FIRE don’t go live in a no/low tax jurisdiction even for a few years e.g. Dubai, some Caribbean islands. I get that some people will have family circumstances (e.g. elderly parents to look after) so it won’t be possible for them, but for a significant proportion it will be an option

Probably because they're in jobs that don't have that kind of mobility

It’s hard to get a good paying, remote US job and live outside of the US as non-US citizens. Plus as non-US citizen, I think there’s limit in how many months you can stay outside of the US before your residence or work visa gets revoked, you’ll need to budget in traveling back to the US every twelve months or so.

like

Yes. It was every 12 months for me back then. Or you can apply for a re entry permit that typically gives you 2 years

Or why a US citizen goes to a zero tax state and finds a low cost of living spot. That’s what I did. Not everyone wants to make sacrifices. At the end of the day people want a certain lifestyle. “Life is too short”. They get emotional.

like

States make their revenue up in other ways, often with housing costs. If I could get work to pay for me to live in a no-tax state while I travel for work and live in hotels on their dime, I’d do that for sure.

The good paying jobs in those countries are very hard to get

like

I'm sure the non-US citizen has some of the same issues as US citizens. Sometimes we want to be near people that we know or are familiar with.

Education for children, healthcare access…

Lots of possible answers here but one i'll offer is that lower cost area will also give me a lower income and the more i wont be able to take provide for elderly (yes unfortunately part of the generation that is the elderly's retirement lol)

The higher income in a higher COL area still gives me a better savings rate

like

Language, cultural preferences

Because Dubai is very expensive and would delay FIRE

Health insurance and quality of life is a big factor.

hello! I’m looking to get some insight to see if I’m being paid fairly for where I’m at in my career. I’ve worked at the same company for 2.5 years. This is my first job out of college. Started as an HR Admin, basically in a call center for all HR related inquiries and now am a Sr Admin assisting with escalations, interviewing, training new hires, supporting my team, scheduling, keeping track of stats- phone calls, tickets resolved, etc. I’m making $52k per year and work remote out of MA.

Morgan Stanley Referral?

I'm interested in a new grad quantitative analyst position at Morgan Stanley (Montreal, Quebec, Canada). It's a hybrid position

I have 1yr experience as a data analyst at AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) and feel like I fit the requirements very well.

I'm happy to talk in more detail if there's anyone who can reach out! Any help with the referral is greatly appreciated!

Lastly, if you could just reach out with advice about the process prep, I'd be very grateful as well!

Well yes. Crypto is taxed like stocks & other types of property. When you sell for a profit, you are required to pay tax on the gains. It’s called capital gains tax.

I’m considering building up my I bonds to eventually replace my 6 month expenses emergency savings account. Any downsides I’m not considering? If I slowly ramp up and ladder, I can partially withdraw any amount if I need to after a year. Even with lower inflation in the future, I’m guessing it’s going to beat a savings account yield. Thoughts?

I was once at a dinner with a second year analyst, consultant, and partner, and the analyst said he planned on retiring by 30 and the partner and consultant laughed. Little did they know, the analyst owned his own home and rented all the rooms out so he payed no rent, never ate out, only grocery shopped, and very very rarely bought anything new. He saved most of his income, and was perfectly content with just his video games. That man was serious about not being stuck working forever.
