Slalom Consulting this might be a total long shot, but I recently finished the interview process with slalom and they gave me a *verbal* contingent offer for an incoming contract. However, I just found out I might have to relocate to Boston soon. I would love to stick with slalom as the goal company, but wondering if I could talk to the recruiter about transferring my application to the Boston office? Any advice? TY!

B1: They usually do a very large chunk of the work - at least in the first weeks. Giving birth and all that ;)
I think 4-8 weeks difference is fair.
I think this is confusing the issue: maternity and paternity leave are not just for medical reasons. There’s a real reality of valuing taking care of children. When you create divides on who is responsible for childcare, it reinforces gender stereotypes
That’s the difference between a product focused company and a service focused company. In consulting, your the revenue generator... can’t have you out too long
PwC policy is up to 6 months, less for dads. I think maternity is longer than paternity to account for the physical demands on mom that don’t exist for dads. Giving birth, recovering, breastfeed (if you choose to). I don’t think it’s meant to imply that taking care of the child is only moms job.
Let’s discuss how oddly backwards we are about this. Difference between maternal / paternal leave implies moms do all the childcare
I definitely agree men should have more paternity leave. I think any/longer paternity leave would help change stereotypes about child-rearing and would make taking maternity leave less of a detriment to some women’s careers
That being said, maternity leave should probably be slightly longer since you generally need approximately 6 weeks to heal post-birth, longer if it’s a C-section - that’s usually covered as “disability” leave though.
I also feel incredibly fortunate that I can come back to work part time after maternity leave for a while before transitioning back to full time. That’s probably more useful to me than maternity leave after the 8th week mark.
^agreed. The leave difference doesn’t imply that moms do all the child care, it recognizes the additional recovery time needed after carrying a child and delivering a child.
If leave was 52 weeks for everyone, that is more than enough for the physical recovery, creates lots of time for bonding, and would narrow the portion of the wage gap attributable to tenure. Obviously, that’s a bit of a pipe dream. The need for extra time for moms related to physical recovery is mostly a product of leave just being too short overall.
Deloitte gives 4 months for both maternity and paternity, but moms can also take up to 2 months disability to give birth so works out to up to 6 months maternity
6 months before qualifying for parental leave
Whatever the full duration of FMLA is that’s what it should be. I think that’s 1wk for every year you were at the firm on full pay, the remainder of the 12 at 60%, then long term unpaid. Same as it is for hospitalized employees.
