Looking for a soundboard.
Expecting parent, 35yo, NW of $1.2M with investment property in my hometown in Europe near family & friends (mortgage is less than $1k). Current expenses in Bay Area is 5K a month, probably more once baby comes.
Thinking of leaving Bay Area in 2 years and semi-retire for a few years in Europe, focusing on parenting and freelancing.
Any thoughts on this plan? Anything I should be aware of?
Thanks!

Is that NW individual or household? Seems like a low amount to be able to retire in Europe w/ a kid.

like

Individual, but with partner is maybe 1.5M.

Maybe not fully retiring, but avoiding 9-5 jobs for a few years while kids are little.

Thanks for the honesty, though!

Just stay in EU and full retire. Cheap and good healthcare, education, wine, and food. What else could you want? We americans setting our house on fire. Get out while you can 😶

Factors to consider:
- How much is the cost of living including accommodation, healthcare, education, taxes, etc in your European country of choice and how do you plan to fund it? Will you have enough funds to support your desired lifestyle, etc for the period of time that you want?
- Citizenship/residency: Double check if regulations are changing in your desired country due to Covid. In some places it might not be as easy or straightforward as it used to be so worth confirming
- Re-entering the workforce: You mentioned you plan to semi-retire for a few years before going back; worth keeping in mind ways to stay connected in your preferred industry during that time otherwise it might not be so easy to re-enter the workforce again if you’ve been out for a few years.

Otherwise enjoy your time with your little ones! This is time that you won’t be able to get back - so is great that you’re planning to spend more time with them intentionally.

Doesn’t European CoL vary? I’d think it would depend on the country you move to.

Yes; Moving to a very low cost part of Europe; probably $1K-2K in expenses

I think it's a good plan, main thing you would have to consider is the taxes involved between both countries. Anything geopolitical you can't really anticipate anyhow. You didn't mention citizenship, etc so can't comment on this.

Thanks! Dual citizenship, so we're good on that front 🙂

Assume you are a citizen (you said partner not spouse and referred to hometown in Europe). If not, you’ll likely lose your green card.

Sorry, meant spouse.
I have dual citizenship so we're good there 🙂

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

How did you tell your manager you’re pregnant? Did it affect pay/promos? And then, subsequently, how did you start letting colleagues know you’re pregnant? Feels awkward to just randomly drop the news in a meeting! I work remotely so it’s hard to tell by video :) I’m 21 weeks and feel like I’ve waited as long as I can to at least notify my manager. I was waiting to negotiate my salary for next year but per company trend that doesn’t get set until January (manager reviews are written in Dec).

Would like some thoughts on a 2-br NYC condo my husband and I are considering. $250K HHI (no kids). No loans or debts, both have newish cars fully paid off.

Offer would be for $725K, with 10 percent down. 30yr mortgage @5%. We would need to include closing costs in the mortgage, to keep about $10k liquid. Monthly costs will be about $5k.

This unit is special, very rare (we’ve rented in the area for 10 yrs and know the local market well). Should we go for it?
