Unless you have a strong preference for digital, a general consulting role positions you much better (regardless of company). PEG moves fast, but you’ll be well set up coming out of it and wont be limited to PE going forward.
You’ll just potentially burn out in that 12 months doing PEG work back to back.
Having worked at both firms, I have a slight inclination towards McK mostly because you’re not locked into doing digital work as part of McK Digital (I know it sounds counterintuitive). You’d retain the flexibility of doing PE work (and even committing to a PE-dedicated team for a few months) or doing other non-PE work that’s interesting to you. That said, if you’re not even mildly interested in technology, I’d go Bain.
McK Digital doesn’t really mean anything if you’re joining as a reg Associate. It just means you’re part of the Digital “practice” from your start date. Everyone has to choose a practice within 2 years or so, you just have a head start. You’re not locked into doing digital projects but you do get first pick of them. In all other ways you are a standard McK consultant. I actually advise any folks remotely interested in digital to apply to McK Digital. If you get here and find something else you like better, you can just switch out.
Is it actually easy to drop the digital practice? I’d assume it would involve a few awkward convos with your DGL and other digital folks. I am part of the digital practice myself and have done very little digital work but not sure if it is possible to officially drop out of the practice (but have never really felt that I needed to either since I don’t see what difference it makes).
PEG and Mck digital are very different work. What do you actually want to do? If PE is your goal Bain all the way. If you want digital go to Mck. Or have you considered Bain's digital group? It's called ADAPT.
