I’ve done PI work my entire career for over 10 years. I’ve worked in state and federal courts and I’ve traveled around the country doing MDL work and bellwether trials. I’ve had a lot of success making the idiots I’ve worked for wealthy, but I’m still waiting for a moment where I enjoy what I’m doing. I feel stuck working in dysfunctional plaintiff firms/cultures. I hate this profession/career more and more each year. Has anybody been successful breaking off on their own in recent years? Advice?

I accepted a base salary of $60k as a first year associate and to expect an end of year bonus based on the settlement of my partner’s cases that I work on substantially. The bonus was only $2500 and I got a base pay raise that still doesn’t bring me into the lower 25% of the market rate. Feeling really undervalued and not sure if this is normal in “plaintiffs world”

How hard is it to start PI work right out of law school with no experience? And what advice do you have for a newly minted attorney who wants to go solo right away.

NYC-area PI lawyers, who do you think is the best plaintiff-side lawyer or firm in the area? Who would you want to handle a major PI or product case for a friend? (Assuming, of course, that you couldn't handle it yourself.)

Advice on talking yourself up in interviews to place yourself above your typical year’s pay/skill? I’m a 2nd yr that is way more qualified than just doc review/discovery/shadowing more senior lawyers but I don’t want a firm to use that as justification to kill/dump me with work. Settled a case at presuit mediation. Payment was to be made within 21 days. We are now over 30 days out, and all OC will tell me is that he requested the settlement draft and will let me know when it arrives. At what point do I file a complaint to enforce the settlement (and to seek fees and costs)?

Generally speaking, is “two weeks notice” reasonable with a plaintiff’s firm?

Tip to Plaintiffs bar, the tough guy act is not as effective a tactic as you think it is. Bad behavior hurts your clients, gives overwhelmed ID lawyers and adjusters the excuse they need to triage your case and delay reporting for settlement authority.

Any tips for transitioning into a new firm? I was with my previous firm for 5 years. Came to a new firm a couple weeks ago, and I’m taking over around 25-30 cases, all in different stages of litigation. Any tips for someone who went through this successfully? It’s tough, between 2 different managing partners who are different but my cases are pretty 50/50 between them. My previous firm I had far fewer cases.

I’ve been trying to recruit attorneys to join our team at my firm but it’s been incredibly difficult to do so, even for friends of mine who I know are working at firms which are really terrible. It seemed a lot easier to get people before Covid hit as people changed firms all the time but now it seems much more difficult.

Has anybody had this same experience? Does anybody know the cause? Finally, does anybody have any helpful tips?
