Counter argument is that you have to make an actual effort to introduce yourself to someone. "Oh no, I have to spend 10 minutes talking to this person I don't know?!" I've met plenty of new people over zoom, and I'm pretty sure I've gotten to know each one better than I ever would've if I'd given them the old "sup" and kept on with my day.
In a weird way, I think this whole zoom isolation thing forced us back into doing a lot of these interpersonal communication things we stopped doing a while ago. And I'm okay with carving out a few minutes of my day to get to know someone and make us both feel like we're not stuck in a room alone.
I agree that it's important for us to connect while isolated, but I will say there is a difference between intros when you're new vs if you've been there awhile.
Intros when you've been there awhile are easier b/c you have a better understanding of how their cog works within the machine that is the company, even if you have never met them before. You can connect about projects, coworkers that you've both worked with, company announcements.
When you're new, the obvious go-to is to discuss roles, but depending on how early it is, you may not fully grasp what they're saying b/c you don't know how everything works yet, so you don't know which questions to ask. And there isn't a shared environment that you can use as a talking point. No thoughts shared about the company snacks or the goings-on down the block. That's why I prefer the quick intro, then later on you get to learn about each other more as there are more interactions and you can see personalities come through in email/slack/meetings. But who's putting a 3 min meeting on someone's calendar?

yup, we’ve been doing this for over a year. make the best of it.
and for people who want to WFH permanently, this is the counter argument. there’s something to be said for in person.

I can’t speak for everybody but for me I want the ability to work from home whenever I want, permanently. That doesn’t mean I never want to be in the office again.

What’s weird about it?

See I hate a desk drive by, because then I’m like “What? What was I doing before I was interrupted? Who the hell was that and will I ever interact with them again?”
Having to be a little thoughtful about how you’ll interact and what kind of impression you want to make isn’t a bad thing...
Luckily, I met my team virtually and I was also invited to the office to pickup my computer and key card and attend a socially distanced lunch.
