The newest refresh is still using 2 year old hardware which is pretty sad. Tablet wise it is the closest contender to a Cintiq I have found, but you cannot connect the display to an outside machine, so you are stuck with the hardware (unupgradeable, souldered) you originally purchase. As for the quality compared to Mac it is comparable. No i9 processor, but a better graphics card, so depending on your workflow it may or may not be better. Personally I just wished I could buy the screen and pen and replace my 24in cintiq and use my 2080ti/ i9 on my custom machine, but Microsoft doesn't understand its consumers.
Oh dear not being able to use an external monitor might be a deal breaker....shopping for a friend who wants more options than Mac but that's a bummer and annoying. Thanks for this!!
I had one for a year, loved it, but I'm more tech than creative. Never used the pen. I had a dock for it at work which was great, dual external monitors and full keyboard. Not the best attached keyboard, but performance was great.
There are two different docks, the new one is simply a port extender and allows two HDMI connections and two usb. The older dock I liked better. I'd put it in and it would enclose the tablet and have the ports on the back. I don't know if they still make that one, it was a surface 3 I think
