Not getting fired. Everything is fixable
Every lawyer in your firm has made a mistake that required a supplement or amendment. Just recognize it and never do it again.
If worse comes to worse, ask for three- to-six months severance, face to be on website until you find a new job, COBRA three-to-six months, recommendation letter and mutual non-disparagement letter. Reach out to recruiter Carrie Printz. She’s AMAZING.
Carrie is the best. Second that.
I made a mistake around this magnitude (missed a bunch of things in some exhibit charts and had to supplement and refile all of them….two months later lol…). I got a stern talking-to but didn’t get fired. Mistakes happen, including big mistakes. I have supervisors who have missed filing deadlines, forgotten to attach their briefs to motions and not gotten a courtesy extension, etc. Things happen but almost everything is fixable.
I made much worse mistakes than that I am still employed. You’ll be fine! :)
Sorry to hear you’re going through that. Like everyone else has posted, every attorney at your firm has made a mistake at some point. If you’d like to be proactive just in case, try emailing alumni from your undergrad and law school at desirable firms and see if they’re willing to chat over the phone about their experiences. I wouldn’t push your resume on them immediately, try to ease into it during the conversation. I’ve had a lot of success doing this. Hopefully you’re in an area with a hot lateral market right now.
I know somebody that wrote wire details down wrong and had $500 million+ disappear into the ether for 2+ days. They weren’t fired. Don’t get ahead of yourself.
You're not getting fired over this.
