This is most likely just a phase and will pass in a few nights or weeks. If you have a partner, try splitting up nights where one is on duty and the other can literally put on noise cancelling headphones and get a full night’s sleep. It’s not perfect but can help. Also, lots of coffee and going to bed much earlier than you normally would.
Hope I won’t need a sleep consultant
I feel this one - I have a two year old as well, and if he wasn’t in bed with me and keeping me up when he shifted around, he was waking up ridiculously early and wanting to get up and play (he pokes me too, why do they always poke? ‘Excuse me mummy, time to get up’ with a poke was my alarm clock for a while there!). It’s so draining when you can never get into a proper sleep cycle.
The (hopefully) good news is at your child’s age, this is likely temporary. My son has been a bad sleeper from the start, but even he’s getting easier when it comes to sleep time. This might last a few weeks though, so in the meantime, perhaps on a weekend you can alternate getting up with your toddler while the other sleeps in? It’s not ideal, but a few extra hours can go a long way to making you feel human again.
If you’re doing the lion’s share of the evening wake ups, maybe your husband can take your toddler to the park for a few hours on Saturday or Sunday too, and let you have a day off to rest and recharge. It’ll make the start of your week a little more bearable at least, and then you can try to get your husband to do the evening settling towards the end of the week so you’re not completely running on empty by Friday.
Unfortunately there’s no perfect answer when it comes to toddlers - trying to control a small human is like trying to control a hurricane most of the time. At least they’re often cute while they’re wreaking destruction! I hope things have improved for you since you first posted, good luck!
Thank you! :)
We had the same issue.. eventually got an Elmo alarm clock/ light (red when you sleep and turns green when it’s okay to get up). It worked well, out LOs have it in their room now at 18mo (they are starting to get the concept). It helps.
Good luck!!!
Thanks!!!
Ours was waking up to potty so we bought an extra diaper liner to keep him dry. Has slept through the night since
He is back on sleeping through the night but he started potty training, so it’s good to know about this to be extra prepared. Thanks! What’s the brand of the extra diaper liner you got?
Try bringing the baby into bed with you
Ouy I understand
