Have you ever felt uncomfortable treating a patient? I don't feel unsafe, and the patient isn't making me uncomfortable physically or anything, I am just seriously disturbed by the discussions we're having about what they're going through. I've been working at this hospital 4 years and this is the first time this has ever happened. Is it wrong to consider asking for a transfer?

Yes. Before I worked at a hospital I worked in a private office and had a client who was struggling with something extremely disturbing to me. I pushed through it, and I'm glad I did. The client eventually had some really great breakthroughs and I kind of pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

There will always be a sense of uncomforting feeling when treating patients. It's just normal. You've been there for 4 years and you are able to pull it off. Maybe what you need is a break. Take some time to relax rather than ask for a transfer. What difference does it make? Your job is still centered on treating patients. Deep breaths and you'll be okay.

I would process that a bit with your supervisor or a trusted colleague. It’s not wrong to ask for a transfer, but it may be an opportunity for growth if you can work through it.

Yes I have. Sometimes I had to take a short walk outside to reset after our sessions. You will know if you need to do a referral by listening to yourself. Sounds like you’re close…have you gotten supervision on the client?

Omg yes! It was doing family therapy. My job was accepting unnecessary referrals that didn’t need our services just for the money. They would lie and said if I assessed the family and they didn’t need tx they would let them go. They lied and I had to see a family who didn’t need services. Dept of Juvenile Justice was sending families who didn’t need services all because the county mental health was full for individual therapy. They said they want to show the courts some type of mental health tx. When I bought it up my job was dismissive. I left there due to other reasons also.

What do I do? I called in sick on Monday because of a flu that turned out to be COVID. I am a manager in the logistics department, where I shouldn't come into the office to avoid risking anyone's health. However, I've been away for 3 days now and my superior is calling me in to work, even if I'm not totally healed. Considering I work alongside the drivers and they have to meet our clients, I wouldn't want to be the patient zero in the office.

How many therapists (and social workers too!) see a therapist themselves? Do you find it helpful?
I think there's this myth that therapists have all their own sh*t figured out, and for me at least I know that's far from true (hopefully it isn't just me). On the contrary, I think we should be leading by example!
