My 6 yr old son has been recently diagnosed with ADHD and level 1 autism. The development pediatrician recommended Ritalin for him and I feel this is too early for him to start taking meds. Does anybody have similar experiences? Or know if meds can help or have long term effects ?

An encouraging story: I’m 40+ years old. My best friend, since I’m 1, and still my best friend was in Ritalin throughout school. He was always the behavior “problem” for many, but for me he remains the most loyal and close friend. He always had a teacher or two throughout school that saw through the diagnosis, and his parents did two things right, in addition to listening to the doctors: they paid those teachers who really understood the kid to come over after school or on Sundays just to hang out with him, and likely to reinforce some school lessons and make sure he had a positive association with school. The second thing they did right is they never lowered their expectations of him. He had to go to college and support himself after. Today he is the most successful and sociable person I know, and is prominently featured in Forbes due to his success. So do what you need to, give him every bit of support you can afford. but most important keep his standards, hopes and dreams as high as you would otherwise. You can do this!!!

Sorry you’re going through sorry you’re going through this. Maybe get a second opinion from another doctor

Thank you, we are planing to get a second opinion.

This is purely anecdotal and just my experience, but my brother was put on Ritalin when he was young back in the late 80’s. Probably 7-8 years old. Never liked the way it made him feel and rebelled against taking it when he was older, like middle school. Overall I don’t think it helped much as he is now 40 and jumps around in restaurant jobs and never finished college despite multiple attempts. I don’t think you can put this squarely on Ritalin, as he has issues (why they prescribed in the first place), but I do think it was too young and not sure it helped. Although, who knows what the alternative would have been.

Thank you, we are thinking of getting a second opinion and also exploring alternatives but wanted to see if others have similar experiences.

Did you talk to the doc about your concerns? If you want to wait for meds, maybe they will work with you to develop a plan that feels better for your family.

We did speak to him and he is strongly suggesting to try and then experiment with the dosages or other similar medicines like adderal but he is strongly suggesting to get started with it.

My youngest was diagnosed ADHD at age 6 as well, along with dyslexia. We worked with her doctor to try some different things... we changed diet, sleep schedules, accommodations in the classroom and at home, our discipline approach at home and lots of therapy. We were glad to find a doctor who was willing to work with us. That said, we ultimately went to medication but I think the changes we made before that were actually favorable and we’ve kept most of them. Obviously my daughter is young but the difference has been amazing in terms of her ability to participate in school and her progress has been great.

The medication has really helped a lot but I am still glad that we didn’t jump right to meds because I do think all this other stuff is/was necessary. If we had gone straight to meds we may not have spent the time to put these other things in place. On meds, she’s the same kid in terms of being funny and creative and smart. She’s still active and busy. But, she can hold a conversation, answer questions, and do schoolwork without losing her train of thought.

Hi OP. My son was diagnosed with ADHD, autism and impulse control disorder at the age of 4 by a Developmental Pediatrician and a psychologist.

We started out initially using Tenex, 1/2 mg a day to help with attention at preschool. As he got older the dosage was increased as needed.

When he was 6 and halfway thru kindergarten we added Ritalin to the mix. We started at 5 mg but it is now up to 20. He is now 7 years old. The lower doses did not show any effect so we increased it slowly. We can definitely see a difference in his behavior and attention being on it, and can tell if we don't get his dose at his normal time.

Definitely get a second opinion if you are unsure. Also make sure to speak to a psychologist to back up the diagnosis.

You will find that with an autism diagnoses, there are tons more programs and help available to you and you child then if they didn't.

If you have not done so already, contact your school district and start working on an IEP. This can get you and you child a lot more help in school. We get OT, speech, PT and a full time paraprofessional to help him with his classwork.

Whatever you do don't let them pigeonhole him into a special education program. Stay mainstream at all costs if you can. We have seen kids with minor autism get worse since they learn behaviours from kids who may not be as high functioning.

Both of my kids take concerta for adhd. One has mild to moderate Tourette’s syndrome. It’s working well for both. My oldest with Tourette’s went from not being able to pay attention at all in school or on tests to straight As within one year. My youngest still has some hyperactivity issues we are hoping he will grow out of like his brother but is also excelling in school. Medicine was ramped up over time and they often take less on weekends and less in summer. Started them both in 6th grade. Noticeable improvement in executive skills.

Question, if you pay off your house isn’t a 100k salary more than enough to sustain a good lifestyle? My goal has always been to payoff my mortgage then find a really easy analyst role to sustain my expenses. Assuming I’m a director/VP by the time my mortgage is paid off I’d probably be able to do an analyst 40hr week in like 10hrs. Esp at some of these low expectation companies. What do y’all think about this plan?
