Not that it really matters to me was my unwillingness to shuffle my daughters schedule to accommodate a last minute client request. Ive worked at this place for two years and to be clear, Ive made it abundantly clear from the interview that my daughter is PRIORITY. I work there out of convenience. Accepted a lower title and a significant pay cut (13 years experience) to be close to home and have a healthy work life balance. Her unprofessional and inappropriate commentary (and other behavior too much to go into here) has successfully poked the (mama) bear. I’ll be resigning next week. I believe if a company doesn’t respect its employees priorities or its employees, they’re not worth working for.
I have this model of boss, too. Somehow her week off to move her kids into their dorm or for their wedding doesn’t count, but my morning off for a school thing does. And, I was around when her kids were younger and she totally ran out for a soccer game or to to give a ride. But in her mind she “did it all while inconveniencing no one!” Bullshit, lady.
Just ignore it, you can’t teach a grown woman empathy or perspective or self awareness.
I kind of agree w the above comment about talking about it. If you are planning to resign, you have nothing to lose but I don't get why people think the answer is to quit. Can't we try to change things? I'm basically in the same boat. 2 young kids, lower title for work life balance.
When you quit make it crystal clear what the issue is, so that hopefully future mothers at the company will benefit from awareness and change. Best of luck. You deserve respect
Oooh that just angers me. Do you have to resign? Can you talk to her? Move accounts? Its not fair that you have to leave.
Yep I had a boss who passive aggressively told everyone told everyone how quickly she went back to work after having her kids while I was pregnant. I applaud you for drawing a line in the sand.
@FIP1 its a small agency that she owns. We have about 21 accounts of which I oversee about 15 (project based rather that AOR/retainer work) There are multiple issues at this place. Most stemming from her lack of understanding of the business combined with a lot of unprofessionalism. I feel like as a grown women, running a business she should know what is and isn’t appropriate to be said and done at work. I, someone 20 years younger than her, having never owned a business and reporting into her should not have to tell her these things. Its a toxic environment getting worse by the day. Leaving is absolutely necessary at this point. It does suck because shes the only problem. The rest of the team is awesome...but they’re all actively trying to get out as well!
@D1 in addition to having kids and a lower title for work life balance, is your boss/direct report also the owner? Has she made comments about you and your child to the team you supervise? Made inappropriate racial comments to you, a woman of color? Disregarded or ignored previous instances where issues were brought to her attention? Is your boss also HR, therefore all grievances that start with her also end with her? If so, we’d absolutely be in the same boat and I’d love to hear more on the best way to approach another conversation about all of this with her and/or identify what you have found to be the alternative answer to quitting in this situation.
