My agency still issues both shotgun and AR.
Yes, we have both actually. I am old school and still prefer the shotgun.
I personally wouldn't carry a shotgun over an AR platform, as I think the AR is more effective for most situations. However, I know that some departments still do issue shotguns, mainly for door breaching or beanbag rounds. I think that in most situations the AR would be the go-to choice if given the option.
Idk about anyone else but in order to breach with a shotgun, it normally takes a certification to do it. You also do use regular rounds to breach. If you were to breach with a slug or buck shot there is a serious risk of it becoming lethal on the other side of the door. So the idea of using a shotgun to breach is usually only done on S.W.A.T. call outs. However, in a situation where you have to dispatch an animal a shotgun becomes a very useful tool. Way more effective than an AR platform
Most people at my agency have run an AR. We still have a few shotguns issued out. Those that have them seem to love them. Personally I don’t see the benefit, but I’m glad people are happy with the support weapon they are issued. We used to have a bunch of MP5’s as well but they were too expensive to maintain. Sad I never got to run one.
