My friend just applied for a data science role at a top 10 firm and got a verbal offer.
They tried to negotiate a salary, but they revoked their offer. I've never heard of this. I thought negotiation was standard practice?! What do you think of this?

Not understanding that negotiation has risks is unfortunately also important to learn. If you bargain when you can't, you may lose your footing.

However, it should be clearly stated in the job description that the salary is fixed at a specific rate, with no room for negotiation.

I've done the opposite before. I've been very happy with a company... until they tried to nickel and dime me on negotiations.

I walked away because clearly they were petty with negotiations, and they undermined the little trudt we'd built in interviews, which translates far worse for other things.

When I told them I'm walking away, they caved and tried to offer me my full asking, but the damage was done.

So I guess companies can still do that if they get the suspicion that someone's trying to leverage a higher offer to get a better offer elsewhere.

Spin Master - i agree - in an era where companies look out only for themselves i won't say there's anything wrong with employees looking out for themselves. Go for it. However i think that is more difficult to change a personal brand than a business' brand.

If a business develops a rep for having toxic culture they can essentially fire, hire, raise offers, and brand wash things to a point that people are willing to give them a new look.

As an individual it's harder to shake a reputation once people label you as "the guy that leaves every year months for better pay" or "the guy that will interview elsewhere to leverage a raise" or "this person is interviewing with us with no intention of joining us, just wants a number to take back to his current employer".

While I'm not saying that there's anytbing wrong with that, it can result in companies and recruiters labelling you as someone not worth interviewing in the future. Convincing interviewers that you no longer operate that way is tough, and that's the risk at hand here for individuals, and to the power imbalance.

Personally, my brand is that I will work hard for companies that provide me growth (interesting project opportunities and pay rates) and stability. If they stop providing that (and i will raise it to them that I'm unhappy with that), I will start interviewing elsewhere. Once I'm at that point, there are no warning shots. There is no negotiation to try and convince me, etc. Once i get a good offer, I'm out.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

I’ve got about 20 years cross channel experience in marketing, split between big brands and startups, and I’m considering pivoting into a data science/data analyst role. I know it will initially be a step back in comp but is it at all realistic for a person with certificate level experience in data analysis but a decent marketing management background to expect $150-200k comp or is that mostly for degreed candidates (or not realistic at all)? Any guidance here is greatly appreciated.
