I would speak with your MD and ask him to allow you to move and perhaps you can assist in training the new hire as well as still provide him your help. Tell him that you will resign if he doesn’t allow you to move into the new role.
Don’t threaten to quit just because you don’t like something. Everyone is replaceable and you would just hurt yourself.
However, have you thought about talking with the ER person who really wanted you, ask them for advice and explain what has happened with the MD. Maybe the two of them can work together and put you where you will flourish.
I feel your frustration, sometimes when we're good at something people get intimidated. Hang in there till the job market improves a bit. You'll find your wings!
Sounds like it's past time for you to start looking elsewhere.
I worked for a company about 15 years ago where the manager I had at the time tell me I was too good in my role to move on to another team (which had an opening I was interested in). Needless to say, I ended up leaving that company as soon as I found something I was interested in/
You said you’re manager said, “You were too critical of your back office operations,” yet you stated you were being punished for being “too good.” Maybe your self perception is misguided? I would suggest having an open adult conversation with your manager and asking for more clarification on his assessment of your performance. Even if you disagree with a manager, you can always learn something. Plus, you might want to rethink quitting because you didn’t get your way. In case you hadn’t noticed, there is a war going on, gas and grocery prices have doubled, and the job market is horrible according to others on this site. I’m sure your current role is better than Walmart, right? Good luck!

That’s a really frustrating spot to be in. I wouldn’t quit just to prove a point though, that can backfire more than it helps. If anything, it might be time to have a direct conversation about a path forward with your MD or start looking externally for ER roles where you’re not blocked. Sometimes moving is the only way to get unstuck.
I would speak with your MD to understand if they’re willing to change their mind. Depending on how that goes, then decide what your next step is
