I’d highly recommend it. And even if after a time you’re not feeling Portland, WK is great about office transfers so there are always options.
I have a friend who’s been working there for over a year, and she lives on the East Coast. They fly her into Portland for big pitches/when it’s important to be in the office.
I have two OTHER friends who also work there and live In Portland. And they seem to adore it and are thriving in the office culture.
Seems like there are options.
Hi! I’m in Portland. Now you know someone if you want the job. 🥂 good luck with the decision.
Think about it this way — what’s the worst thing that can happen? You move to Portland. Maybe don’t like it? Maybe don’t like W+K? If that’s the case, you now have W+K on your resume, which means you’ll have a pretty easy time finding a role elsewhere. Very low risk / high reward situation imo.
Came here to say the same thing. You can always leave. Nothing is permanent! The worst thing you do is you try it and it doesn’t work. At the very least, you leave with your network and mind expanded a little more and that’s never a bad thing.
You have W+K on your resume, it means something. Do a 2 year stint and then more doors will open. Hell, you may just love it.
If you don’t want it, can I have it?
I live in Portland. The main reason people don’t last here is the rain, so be very honest with yourself about whether you can handle nonstop damp gray/rain for 9-10 months. Otherwise it’s a very nice place and I am sure you will make friends at work, or there are lots of fun classes or meetups etc. And the summers are gorgeous.
I’ve lived in both. It’s a barely noticeable difference IMO, I feel like it used to rain harder (stormier) in Seattle but it’s similar now. Portland has much hotter and longer summers in recent years, like REALLY REALLY hot, but it’s bearable if you have AC
The dream of the 90's is alive in Portland!
Pack some flannel.
I made the move without knowing a soul earlier this year. Also moving away from my hometown and family. Best decision I’ve ever made. Even if Portland as a city isn’t the best place you’ve ever been, the office and people in it absolutely make up for it.
What’s also nice about the Portland office is that everyone’s a transplant, so it makes it really easy to meet people. Lots of work events and happy hours too to make friends
A friend just accepted a role at WK Portland and she’s also required to relocate. They gave her an opportunity to visit before making her decision, have you?
No other place has felt as good as wk PDX. But that was under different leadership. Carl era is still shaking out and it’s been V bumpy from what I’ve heard.
Nature around Portland is so amazingly beautiful. Also Portland has the highest per capita of strip clubs in America. Good food carts. Doesn’t get too cold in winter. Not far from Twin Peaks.
The hardest grey rainy season is Nov - April- then it starts to give more sun breaks. Like clockwork. It’s tough but it’s not 10 months like people say.
Survival tips for rainy: cozy wine bars and saunas (try knot springs or Löyly)
It was actually 10 months of winter this past year, so…

Portland is pretty cool tbh

Portland isn't for everybody, but for a certain kind of person it's awesome.
Those were just all the people who didn’t quite work out at W+K.
I’d say yes for the experience. Two years there will take you a long way in your career.
Just do it.
I moved from NYC to Portland two years ago and I love it here. The rainy winter weather is challenging, but at least we don’t get the ice and snow that NY gets. It helps if you’re an outdoorsy person; nature is spectacular here.
This is lame, but the first time I ever visited Portland on vacation, I made it a point to walk by the W+K office. This was around when they had first launched Old Spice Guy. So the buzz around the agency was surreal.
I paused for a moment outside and kept walking, as I didn’t want to be too weird. But what a dream to work at a place like that.
I went one step further (lamer) when I visited for the first time in 2013 - went into the lobby, took a picture of the big wooden beaver (it resonated with me as a Canadian), enjoyed the gallery of employee portraits on the wall, and then left.
Hopefully one day I’ll be working there. 💪 🙏🏼

I've lived in Portland before. During the summer in Portland it's like summer on steroids, it's beautiful. The rest of the year though is constant overcast and drizzle. That kind of weather for 8 months straight can be tough for some people. Just a heads up if you're a person who loves sunshine, haha.

Good problem to have.
