I’m sorry for the spot you’re in. I think your choice should depend on your circumstances. For example are others relying on you for the benefits? Would taking a gap be possible with your finances? Just open questions to consider.
I do agree that the market is rough. Can you try applying to other positions to see what’s out there before making any drastic choices?
If all else fails, are you able to start quietly disengaging and gain back time for yourself to recover from burnout? It’s not ideal, but sometimes taking a “work breather” is best in the long run.

OP - I have no advice; I'm looking elsewhere because I'm in the same spot. I could have a career here and there are a lot of great people, if only my boss weren't blocking me.
Financially I can afford a sabbatical, but I enjoy the discipline work provides. Also, I have never not worked so the full freedom will quickly wear off, resulting in boredom and resentment. Have a family and kids so can’t just pack up and move abroad for a few months.
Ugh, I just hate to be back in the same spot every few years. Need to learn that comfort / complacency is acceptable (vs always being in growth mode)
First off, I’m sorry that your search is challenging, I’m sure someone like me sounds entitled. Knowing the market sucks is honestly the only reason I’m holding on so tight, but it just gets to a point where you know it’s not worth your health…but then you wonder if you’re just being a baby and need to set better boundaries / discover and COMMIT to hobbies because working that extra hour won’t do anything long-term. I tell you my brain is fried.
I just took a vacay and it helped for a week 😂. Maybe a long weekend soon
I’m in a very similar boat.
I’m stagnant because the company acquired a smaller business and placed all their leaders in the roles I was aspiring toward, we’ve been through 2 RIFs in my time here, multiple times I’ve had my team approved for added head count and promotions only to have it revoked days later, and my boss changed 7 months ago and he is micro-managey and likes to motivate with threats and mild punishment. I’m so uninvested and ready to leave if something doesn’t change.
I have previously left a toxic job with nothing lined up, and I managed to land a great role within 3 months. Now I’m the sole breadwinner with a stay-at-home-husband who home schools our 3 kids, and I just don’t think I could make that risky move again.
I’ve got alerts on for job postings relevant to my career, so that is one thing I suggest just to keep tabs on opportunities. I recently was scouted by a small business and I’ll be hearing back this week with either an offer or not. If things go well, I’m hoping to use it as leverage with my current role to see if anything can improve. Or I’ll just take the new job.
Hopefully you can do something similar. What kind of roles are you looking for? And any specific locations or remote opportunities?
Try to find purpose outside of work. What do you care about?
I’m hoping to prioritize my health - truly dedicate to eating healthy and working out - keeps getting pushed on back burner esp since I’m exhausted - but need to prioritize. I know that will help with energy (counter intuitive lol) but also provide clear perspective and maybe even gratitude to hold on longer.
