Strat&1 .. OP's question is perfectly fine. Also, our profession is to create client impact, not memorize points conversion tables.
Been trying to think of a constructive way to respond, so shocked that a consultant would ask a question like this...not really hard to look at what the conversion values are for each brands points. Frankly - there is a whole business out there that does it for you (ex points guy). Would've hoped you would have thought through something like - how many points does an spg hotel room cost at a certain level of premium property vs other brands...spg points are not 1-1 comparable to other hotel chains (roughly 1-3 vs Marriott sister brand)..same logic goes for comparing across different types of offerings (air vs hotel)....I worry for our profession...
Re whole program is geared for long term use of the points for travel on partner airlines. If you have a lot of points (not sure right cutoff maybe 250k+) and want the maximum value and aren't ready to travel right now, then open an Amex card and transfer over (if you are serious about this program you should already have a personal Amex). Keep the points there until you find the travel deal you want to use them on. If you have a small number of points then this solution is t worth it due to (1) the annual fee on membership rewards, and (2) the fact that the best deals for airline points arbitrage are for business class travel so you need enough points for those tickets. In this case just buy Amazon or other gift cards.
S1 - I actually think you responded fine but you are assuming that OP is traveling for work and understands the system. Maybe he doesn’t travel and therefore isn’t aware how to approach this question. You would be surprised how many people travel all the time and unaware of “status challenge matching”
Conversely, you can open a no annual fee Amex and keep the points there
I am in the same boat. About to close out my amex and think i am going to cash out on retail. In some cases you can get about 0.1 return on points. Many times less. I just dont really need the airline or hotel points. I am still traveling 120 days a year, so acumulating points. Are people getting higher redemption rates than .01 per point?

I’m pretty savvy with hotels and airlines, but I’ve got 10 years of MR points I’ve never used. I know many redemptions are absolute shit, but I have struggled to find good redemptions to get the best bang from my MR.
LOL S1!
