It’s what you got into consulting to not do
Staff aug = butts in seats. You’re basically acting as a full-time employee for your client. Staff aug work usually involves repetitive and mundane work. No strategy, innovation, or creativity. That’s just my experience. Others may view it more positively
It means you do shitty mindless work that partners love to sell, because it makes them a ton of money, but would hate to do themselves...
Yeah mundane and boring work but if long term - would get you promoted fastrack
The person even an intern can delegate to
Since you’re a new analyst and probably still early in your professional career, I’m going to give you the pros and cons of your options with regards to consulting. From that, you can make a decision if the role is right or not for you. Staff aug, as so many above has pointed out is when you are brought on to act as a full time employee for your client’s organization (very common in the Federal space). Usually the roles are long term (1-4+ years) and offers more security than traditional consulting gigs (which are several month stints). This means that while yes, sometimes it can get boring and repetitive, it will definitely fast track you for promotion as eventually you will become a SME at your role and become a vital necessity for the client. I know cases where new contacts won the rebid for their firm just because of a single person that was so valuable the client didn’t want to lose them. If your end goal of consulting is to learn as many different things as you can and get out, then staff aug is not the optimal way to go. However, if you goal is to grind it out for a long time, it basically is like working in an industry role, but with consulting pay and still somewhat flexibility to roll to a different project if you decide you can’t stand your client (without having to learn firms).
Staff augmentation means you work for firms like Capco or Slalom
No, it means you act to fulfill an operational function, at a high level of performance, for your firm's client.
I’ll be praying for you
So does the role mean you fill a seat at the firm that is open, essentially an intern within a specific role at the company?
Leave*
Basically it’s like being an employee and acting as you would in a normal 9-5. Really boring work, not advisory , no leadership, agree that it’s a moneymaker for partners. But really mindless
Maybe I'm the outlier, but here goes: I have been in and seen many "staff aug" roles, and more than half grew their own team and basically sold work as very junior consultants. 4-8 month gigs are ideal. It also makes you a valuable, steady account team member (Account Lead/Partner track). That's what leads people to become true advisors to long term clients and not just SMEs flying city to city to work with new clients every week. So personally, I've seen it fast track more high performers than being one of many on a project team.
