The change in SALT deductions were the right thing to do but it really hurt residents in those higher state/local tax states.
I lived in NJ right before those changes went into effect so I’d suggest Pennsylvania for an easier move but Washington, Florida, Tennessee, Nevada, and Texas all generally have low taxes, lower cost of living statewide, and candidly the states are just better run.
The pension crisis coming to states like NY, NJ, and Illinois is likely to make things even worse.
There is a simple solution to solving the Chicago pension fund shortfall and it involves no increased taxes. I wouldn’t be overly concerned. Can only speak for IL, not the other states.
You only have a 10% deduction in NJ?
OP is probably referring to the state income tax, not total. Federal is going to be the same regardless of the state you live in.
Florida. Come on down and worry about hurricanes wiping you out multiple times per year.
TX has enormous property tax rates and fees built into every govt. service (same as FL, btw).
Not surprised they don’t show up in the Top 10.
TX, FL
TA1, a .12 tax rate is crazy low.
WA
You only pay 10% tax in NJ if youre making over 1mm+ in w2. Also if I recall, is a marginal tax. OP youre a moron. Also no property tax on vehicles.
TN
NH. Only tax interest and dividend income at flat 3% tax. Salary is tax free
If you want to stay close to NJ just jump over the border to pay. 3% flat income tax.
You need to look at the indirect faces as well - many people I know who moved to Austin pay the same level of tax - the state tax thing is a smokescreen
Austin is brutal. Even though the rates are better than the newer subdivisions in the suburbs, the valuations are insanely high. Our house is probably $800k. Easily $2.5m inside the “loop”.
SD please define better run?
The blue zones file suit or attempt to implement an income tax against the state constitution too. It basically turns into a stalemate.
People in the state though can vote with their feet and most choose to exit King County if they reach a breaking point of disagreement or if they approve of how things are being governed then they can stay. Seattle’s and King County have had councils that have mismanaged their budgets but it doesn’t impact residents statewide.
10% and you're complaining? I earn $300k+ and pay over $100k in taxes and live in NJ.
