Last time I had time off like this, I took a small dose edible, rented a bike, and biked around the entire city. Stopped at the waterfront for lunch. Then continued on and saw all of the city sites, ended at a bar with some nice cocktails and a cheeseburger. I think about that day often, it really was the best.

That really does sound great

A few years ago, I was a bit bored this week of the year and on a whim called up a local animal shelter and asked if they needed volunteers. They did as they were short staffed due to the holidays. I had a blast feeding and playing with tiny kittens and still volunteer there.

Just an idea. Doing something for the community can actually be very fulfilling, particularly this time of year.

Explore your city. Or… if you don’t live in a city, drive/train/bus to the nearest one and explore that.

Wear a mask and stick to outside dining. You’ll be fine.

Hang out at the beach, buy a bus tour ticket for your city, check out the museums (entry is usually free), go check out local flora, hiking trails, zoo and if all else fails and you are in a university town, check out the campus, or the local astronomy club or the libraries.

Is there any advice for networking into projects when you don’t know many people at the firm yet? I always to help on BD work when I’m on the bench, but it never turns into any billable work. Every time I have talked to a partner/senior manager I was told I don’t have the skill set they’re looking for, but I don’t know how to build up from there. Feeing very lost but I want to improve my approach.

A friend of mine from a top tier consulting firm was counseled out. Do you consider it ethical that his career counselor is intentially spreading the information to his colleagues and to other consultants from other companies in the project? What can he do about it? Specially that he considers the potential layoff is purely based on the current situation (chargeability was low) and not on his performance (they said that his contribution to BD during his bench time was low)?
