"A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part." I don't play the last-minute panic game. If it's happening when I'm off the clock, I'll get back to it. If I lose some money in the process, oh well.
With this industry you have to expect the chaos. I learned to build some time buffers on projects so that if anything flips I will either be done or more ahead than I would be. The culture could use some change but it's also the nature of this industry.
Absolutely, building in time buffers is a lifesaver. It helps keep some control amid the chaos. I agree—the culture could definitely shift to respect realistic timelines more, but for now, planning ahead is our best defense.
I do the work and it gets done when it gets done. Changing deadlines is ridiculous and I can’t magic the work done faster.
Couldn’t agree more, I think some clients just don’t understand what deadlines mean.
It's just a matter of communicating and making sure everyone is on the same page. Sometimes people will panic for no reason and want everything done yesterday. But for the most part if you manage time well and also manage expectations, you can keep things running smoothly. When you get down to it, that's just a big part of the job.
Totally agree, communication really is the key in our industry.
I will always state that this will weigh into other pressing requests getting a late delivery, and that they remember it when they eventually complain about a clogged backlog.
That’s a great way to mention it, I might start doing that too
Always plan with contingencies in mind.
It’s annoying, but in my experience never trust the information you have, and have a plan for a complete turnaround in mind.
If others refuse to plan properly, you need be ready to compensate for the bad management of a process that isn't always under your direct control.
Completely agree, I’ve actually starting doing that with one of my clients and it’s saved a few jobs!
