Ask your boss / leadership / HR / Legal for advice. This is a super touchy area
Politics and religion don't belong in the workplace.
^this. Either talk about politics or don’t, but it shouldn’t be based on the content of people’s beliefs (apart from the usual caveats, eg harassment/discriminatory). If I were you, I’d shut down all politics talk on slack. (In person casual talk can work better) This is if you’re speaking in more of a managerial capacity. If you’re talking as a peer/friend, it might be worth bringing up to her specifically because it could be harming her career.
Irrespective of her leanings, she shouldn't be talking politics in the workplace. Have a conversation with her about how her views create a hostile workplace for some of her colleagues. she has every right to her views and viewpoints but a workplace isn't the setting for discussing them. Talk to HR/Legal
It does not matter if the views are liberal or conservative or apolitical, discussions on politics and religion do not belong in the workplace.
I had an experience with a new PM not too long ago. He came over from a different group that was being split up. Super nice guy - like seriously amazingly nice human! He was very much into the more alt-right fringe points of view, which is totally fine if that is your thing outside of work - but he started to post oddly cryptic/really negative/apocalyptic things in our group space like once a week minimum (space of about 75 ppl, never had anyone post anything other than work related topics previously). Frequently when he shared his screen would have tons of tabs of conservative news articles and YouTube videos up. (Which again- totally fine but what was he actually working on? Lol) And in 1:1s and small group settings started to bring up these topics and steer the convo towards them. I was starting to get feedback from other team members that it was making them a bit uncomfortable and he started to get combative with folks who didn’t agree with him, so I talked to HR and had them reach out and talk with him about everything.
As a good rule of thumb it’s never a great idea to bring up super one sided politics or religion in the workplace but it’s also a very sensitive topic for folks so I would recommend reaching out to HR on next steps to be safe…
OP’s political spectrum ranges from “pretty liberal” to “really weird” 😐
Sure CO1, in a vacuum that’s true, but context here makes the intent very obvious
Yeah, I’d talk to my manager about that and express how their comments makes others uncomfortable. Have managers handle this, you don’t want to get involved and make things awkward between you two.
What is your definition of "Really weird?" Is it because it's uncomfortable or different? Personally, I don't think politics belongs in the workplace but I don't think you should alienate someone because of their viewpoints.
You should set a clear & consistent framework. Then make sure to hold everybody (including the "weird political views" developer) to the new rules.
If this is a problem, then try to push the team culture in a way that can be coherently & fairly enforced.
If nobody really cares at all about how the bee people of Omega 8 are using immigrants ferrying vaccines for their evil plot, then you may be able to move past this without expending much managerial capital. (I assume that the team is bothered though!)
