Opinions on a switch to Boutique consulting, matching my McK comp at a higher position (associate -> EM at Boutique)

The main reason is WLB (Time with my partner, kid soon) and I genuinely like the consulting niche I'm in. Their studies are interesting enough.

This isn't career suicide right?

How long do you need the WLB to sustain? I have had this dilemma and same exact reasons as you. At boutique firms once you get past EM - in the next role you will have revenue targets and it’ll get intense again and career progression will be slower vs. MBB. Also, I think MBB $ kicks in once you make P and don’t think boutique will match P pay even if you grind.

I am tenured a EM and Dir roles at boutique had ~$1-5M rev targets for teams/individuals and at much lower comp vs. MBB EM.

This has been my experience so far but curious what others have seen.

Boutique consulting firms usually don’t have straightforward progression (not as many spots for Partners). If you don’t care then okay, if you do care, would advise to jump to industry after you get EM -> options really open up after the designation

Obviously super dependent on the specific boutique; but I absolutely prefer boutique

I've also had the WLB discussion with the partners who were recruiting. It's still consulting obviously but I get a lot lot more flexibility in how I get my work done due to lower pressure/fees.

Is it just in my experience or are recruiters/hiring managers really reluctant these days to discuss salary bands for a given role? I know I'm in the minority here (and I swear this isn't a brag) but is anyone else less stressed this busy season working from home, and finding issues focusing because of it? My work is getting done, but just very very slowly. I'm at a career juncture and have decided on a career in anti-money laundering as my new path. I'm also highly interested in additional education to further my career and am eyeing graduate school. Which is best? A law degree or a master's in international relations? Those are where my interests lie. I keep reading that JDs are valued in compliance but am wondering if a different graduate program is better for my goals. I already plan to obtain the CAMS certification. Thank you!

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…
