Get a good lock and security cables, and you should be fine. Kryptonite usually offers a warranty for the value of the bike as well, so that's a good option.
You can get surprisingly far sticking to the bike trails around the bayous. E.g., you can get from the Heights to downtown without going on any major roads.

It's a good idea but remember that you'll have to haul everything if you wanted to do a grocery run, so keep it small. Biking is very nice near the bayou. It brings you downtown and all the way back to the west side of the park.
I live near the trail so it’s convenient for me. The White Oak and Buffalo Bayou trials are very pretty in the spring and summer.
But I don’t go on the roads much at all, I don’t trust Houston drivers.
You can always bring the bike up to your apt.

If you have expendable income & don’t mind losing/having to replace the bike then go for it. IMO, if bike thefts are common in the area then I would prepare to expect the worst. Up to you if you can handle a theft every now & then
I would not get it if u got a car. If u really want, get a camera n position it where u park it. Put on an alarm system on ur bike when u away. Like they do in Europe. N last get insurance that covers the theft.
Get renters insurance and buy a bike!
I have a bike. I use it to go to the gym, liquor store, cbd store, grocery store, pharmacy, ride through the park, etc. I would never suggest you keeping it outside of your apartment weather messes up your bike. Thefts can be an issue too. I would say put your bike in your apartment or keep it chained up in your apartments parking garage
I spent like $250-300 I think. I got mine from Academy.
I have a bike and love using it for exercising and when it's convenient. If your apartment complex has a parking garage, check inside as some of them have bike storage cages (sometimes on the upper floors). Biking on the road can be fast but extremely dangerous as most people aren't looking for bikers, so definitely have lights and anything else that can help you be seen, and try to avoid crossing the highways unless you have to! The bayous are actually super fun and relaxing to bike on, and if you have a lot of access to your daily needs (convenience stores, shopping, grocery stores, nail places, restaurants, parks, museums, your job, etc) it can be a really convenient way to get around!
