I chose daycares right next to the office instead of the house when they were little, because that shaved the commute-to-pick-them-up time off entirely (and we spent time in the car ride home together singing songs, talking, etc.). It gets harder when they are in regular school, and requires a lot more shuffling. Looking for licensed in-home care (which has more extended hours) vs. daycare was another option where I live, and hidden on some US state’s websites are a list of in-home providers with their safety records and licensing, many of which appear in no “daycare” searches because they’re not schools, but if you find the good ones are like mini homeschools.
This ☝🏽. Also it helped to have a flexible work place and being able to bring your kiddo in after hours.
We found daycare close to one of the railroad stations. Our employers knew that every other day we each needed to leave at 5 to do pickup, but could come in early those days, and on the days we did drop-off we could work late. Of course more times than not I had to log in at some point after I got home on pickup days, but we made it through for about 2.5 years.
More than drop off and pickup, you need to worry about who will stay home when your child inevitably gets sick.
If you have the space, I’ve had a number of people speak really highly of au pairs. It’s apparently not as cost prohibitive as you would think when comparing to day care but you need to have space in your home. Not sure what market you live in?
Babysitter or find other parents that use that day care and see if they can help out (offer to pay them a little). A girl in my daughters schools mom watchers her before and after school. I’m happy it’s a local mom, she’s happy to make a little extra cash and her daughter has a playmate for a couple hours. It’s a win win.
Our daycare was only open til 6pm and getting off work at 5pm and a 90 minute commute we had to adjust work schedules. My husband was able to work 7-4 and I do 9-5. I do drop offs by 7:30 and then he does pick up at 5:30. We explored daycares close to work but I didn’t want them to commute so long and they were more expensive in the city. I nit picked every single hour to try to keep them there as little as possible but now that they’re a tad older (2) it’s not bad. He loves all the play time. We’re all remote now and just sent them back to daycare. I even keep them there full days even though I can pick them up earlier. They enjoy the end of day recess/playtime. And don’t over think it, do what works for you. Both of mine and my husbands work were very open to adjusting
