I went from a digital agency to a tech consultancy this year. I was literally shocked by the size of my bonus (>$25% of salary). My hours are comparable, maybe slightly less, but the learning curve has been steep. The clients are still nuts but their budgets are so much higher. I feel like I wasted a lot of time in the agency world now.
ACN, Cognizant, Wipro, Epam, Capgem, Infosys and Deloitte are good places to look right now.

did this earlier this year. took a contract at a big company and doubled my salary. I have never worked with bigger idiots in my life. Its not worth it. If you want to make money and chill - do this. If you want to make great work with smart people don’t.
Agreed!! Everyone I’ve have interviewed with, from the tech startups industry are total idiots as personalities and without the necessary Business acumen or understanding to say the least- they remind me of the boiler rooms pirates In the 90’s where nobody knew Of Finance or Economics but they were stealing Gramma’s savings into fake investments and vanishing soon after.
Niiice. Daddy want
Would you mind sharing your career path and how you framed your agency skills during the interview please?
1) Agency internships in college at big name agencies in LA and NYC
2) Agency roles in digital and content strategy for several years
3) A former designer I worked with at the agency recommended me for a role at legacy big tech co
4) Spent three years at legacy big tech (title reflected in my post name)
5) Former colleague recommended me for a role at FAANG company. Starting new job at FAANG company on Tuesday in a role that will lead to being management in due course.
Marketing roles at tech cos care about business impact. Quantify as much as you can in your resume (actual results not BS impressions) and demonstrate your ability to be collaborative, work with urgency, and have creative energy. Tech cos love hiring former agency peeps because of our those three reasons.
If making the jump from agency, how do you go about researching salaries and total compensation to make sure you’re not leaving a bunch on the table?
The FAANG companies have a set pay scale for salary, you'll be assigned a level based on your experience and salaries are pretty set within those. What you CAN negotiate is the equity grant.
Gaming industry too!
For folks working on the games its rough, but hours aren’t so bad in the marketing department
How would someone in account management make that move to a FAANG company or similar? I have good digital experience
Thank you for your response! I feel like I’m capable of making the move with my experience.
I will do a bit more research on my end to see how I can specifically make that happen. Exciting!

What was your total compensation before? 224k could be a pay jump or a pay cut without knowing more context.
15 years. I don’t live in your market so my TC is immaterial (though it is higher than yours, even though I live in a cheaper market), just have employees and peers who do.

What kind of work would you typically do for a tech company, just out of curiosity?
Product design for art directors, probably. For copywriters, UX writing or content strategy. That's if you aren't looking to go to an in-house advertising team.
I would kill to work in gaming
Ya we have a bunch of open roles atm
I switched to new trendy tech recently and the processes and micromanagement were so bad I quit. That said, I'm moving to big legacy tech now and it promises to be more chill.
Just be prepared for a lot of ignorance about what you do.
Tech does not get what we do, period
Tried it. Thought it would be an opportunity to get away from dealing with clients, and instead I was dealing with colleagues who had zero marketing experience and no respect for what we do and didn’t allocate any budget to branding, marketing, etc. All I did was education, and it went nowhere. Went right back to agency and never been happier.
YES! See my comment below — you are 100% spot on
Do they need creatives?
I mean that’s broad. I suggest looking at your target company’s career page to see what’s available. Titles would focus more on branding or design rather than typical agency creative hierarchy.
I would love to be in a position to jump to Tech, it’s a huge passion of mine, but I think i’m a little too inexperienced for that to come true — just crossed the 6 month mark, of my first full-time gig, but I have a really flexible skillset, ranging from traditional concepting, visual, and interaction design.
Any tips on making this dream come true?
Wait it out. Having years of experience in agency roles helped me innumerably. I loved my time at agencies but felt it was no longer sustainable for the life I wanted in my 30s.
Congrats! How did you get in? Referral or recruiter?
Referrals
How do they feel about people in middle management who are nearing 50, with a lot of experience? Are there comparable middle management positions that pay more?
Million dollar question: is it remote?
For now, yes. Many tech companies allow it.
That seems kinda low for total compensation? I would expect that to be higher. For those looking to switch, but can’t make it happen, try freelancing.
