I’d recommend taking the 101 and the 1 up the coast rather than taking the five. From LA you can stop in Santa Barbara which has great outdoor activities and then go up along the coast, maybe going to Big Sur as well.
Thank you! I have heard a lot about the 101. Would def like to experience it firsthand
On your way to LA, budget couple hours or possibly a day to explore Laguna beach, Crystal cove, Dana Point, Montage, and San Clemente . They were SoCal’s best kept secret beach towns until they blew up on tiktok recently. Tons to do around there and beautiful cafes, local shops and trails hike.
Highway 1 is awesome. Just don’t drive it all the way. Takes too long and not everything is worth it. But do parts between Carlsbad and LA. And then LA to Santa Barbara and up Big Sur for a bit. And then back onto 5.
Suggestions only, and depends on what activities that you and your family would like to do, along with consideration with a 11 years old:
Day 1: Arrive SD, check in, relax, if arrive early, check out SD Marina and walk around.
Day 2: SD zoo or SeaWorld, recommend the zoo if have to pick one. If leave at a reasonable time, check out Coronado town and get dinner there, you can oversee the SD night time view ~ pretty nice.
Day 3: Driving to LA- On the drive, you can stop by Dana point, Newport beach, etc if time permits. Pick a location to settle, maybe Hollywood or Santa Monica. A bit touristy, but if you haven't been, then that's what people do.
Day 4: With the 11 years old, maybe hit up universal. Or other plans.
Day 5: Making the journey to SF. Recommend to take the drive slow, because it's so beautiful. Recommended stops along the way: Santa Barbara, Big Sur, Caramel, Montarey Bay.
Day 6: Assume you stay at Monterey Bay overnight, stop by the aquarium. Beautiful. Kids love it. Then continue to SF.
Day 7: Explore SF.
Day 8: Explore SF.
Day 9: Depart.
Make adjustment according to your personal interest, of course. 😊 Have a good trip!!
We did pretty much the same itenary in December 2019. The thing I would have done is added one more day along big sur cause it is just so beautiful and so many places you could potentially stop and enjoy. Would recommend a stop at the limekiln park for a small hike to stretch those legs.
If driving the Pacific Coast Highway is a must for you, going North to South puts you on the ocean side for some better views (albiet a little gnarlier driving)
That’s a good point. It’s not a must but, might as well do it to get the experience.
So, fly to SFO, drive down to LA and then on to SD?
Legoland in carlsbad if you or your kid into legos
I’m assuming doing Grand Canyon is not possible in these many number of days? It’s just that flying from east to west is so expensive, I would like to optimize the trip. But, don’t want every experience to be touch and go either
Thank you. That makes perfect sense
SFO is not a city!
Aaah. Of course
Santa Barbara and wine tasting is also a good stop
