Moving is expensive, I am in the process of moving from MD to SF, you will realize how much you have you don’t need when trying to downsize
Not sure what your situation is but if you are willing to sell everything and just rebuy new in your new city that makes things pretty easy.
My wife and I moved from Boston to Dallas. We rented a budget truck and hired local movers to load the truck in Boston, then another set of local movers to unload it in Dallas. I drove the truck and she drove our car. Took us three days, but well worth the savings.

I’m in the process right now, try selling anything that you either don’t need or don’t love, then put the remaining in a pod/upack container. That or just loading up a uhaul and driving yourself is the cheapest bet
If you aren’t in a hurry, UHaul’s a good option. I usually consider how much my time is worth when I think about driving my own stuff, for a cost comparison, but if you’ve got friends/relatives/sights to see along the way, it’s really manageable. Even better if you’ve got a vehicle you can tow with - downsize your stuff to get as small a trailer as possible, then pay your $200 for a trailer and away you go
Drive yourself, was the experience of a lifetime when I did it
If you travel for work anyways, do alt travel and go to your new home location , start bringing those bags with you to your client site, store it at the hotel and then when you fly out on Thursday , go to the hotel to pick it up. Elite travelers get 3 bags each trip for free. This could add up helping you have less items to cover.
I moved from east coast to LA for about $400 shipping boxes through Greyhound. Three caveats: 1) make sure to pack your boxes very well, lots of tape 2) they cannot guarantee a delivery date so you have to be flexible 3) they can't do furniture, so this is ideal is you're planning to buy new stuff at your new location
I used both Pods and UBox (UHauls related service), was pleased with both.
Packed large items (bed, couch, furniture) and other non-fragile stuff in the box, had the box shipped to my new location, where I picked it up once ready.
Did all the packing and loading myself, believe the cost was about $1,500 for both companies.
Never had an issue with damage nor theft.
Hire movers to pack and unpack a truck. Drive the truck yourself
I had good experiences with Premier/Mayflower. There’s an option to fill up flat rate storage containers (~pods), so you can contain the costs and decide 1-2 pods only, and anything extra you’ll get rid of. The containers can also be stored until you’re ready to move in. They also tried to find someone who was moving along a similar route during the same time frame so we could split the cost of the shipping.
As others noted moving can be expensive. Sell/donate what you haven’t used in the past couple of years and then try something like UPACK. Saved me a ton of money and all the donations were tax deductible.
Most of us have way more “stuff” than is needed/used.
Cost to move was more than what most of what I needed. Donated most of it then just brought the essentials. Easy to do when relatively young
