Hillcrest is awesome but it’s LGBTQ. Gotta keep in mind the environment must match your taste.
Downtown can be rough. It’s lively and there’s a lot of great restaurants, but the homeless population is centered there, which is obviously impactful. Also, the big apartment buildings are very transient and sometimes poorly managed. For a more casual, clean and neighborhood atmosphere, I would go with Hillcrest.
Do not move downtown - was just there yesterday visiting a buddy and homeless encampments everywhere. Plenty of other good options - little italy, NP, bankers hill, Bird Rock
Lived downtown my first 5 years, then hillcrest for 2. Depends what you’re looking for. If you want to go out often, downtown is probably the better call. If you want a bigger place for less rent in a relatively quiet neighborhood, hillcrest is great. I’d also recommend looking into north park, it’s the best of both worlds.
Have you thought about pacific beach? Definitely a fun vibe for going out if you’re single. North park would be my next best if you want a little more variety outside of the traditional bar scene that PB has. Love hillcrest and agree with others that it has a huge LGBTQ presence which is fun but can limit your options if you’re not LGBTQ.
North Park
Are you a gay :D? I'm considering same area!
What ambiance/vibe are you looking for and what lifestyle do you lead- are you single, have a family? etc. They’re both great but offer different sets of pros.
Little Italy is fabulous. I’d also look at North Park.
@ey1 I’m looking into north park as well but some are expensive. I thought of pacific beach but feel it might be too far since I don’t plan on having a car as it’s an added expense but I don’t mind commuting either on transit.
I have lived in both and personally, hillcrest is better IMO.
Parking is slightly easier in Hillcrest and the things to do are less touristy.
Little Italy is the exception, I loved living there, but also parking is the worst of all, and it's super expensive.
Hillcrest was more like the suburbs and a really easy uber to downtown when I wanted.
Living downtown comes with the noise of downtown at all hours and when you just want to go to bed at 9 it makes it difficult.
Thanks Jordan! I’ve also decided to go for Hillcrest :)
