May already have had a candidate selected but were required to post it, even if it was just for a couple of hours. I have BEEN that candidate. Manager called and told me to watch for the posting named blah-de-blah and send my application to that listing. Once I had that officially clicked in they could disable the listing. It was just about paperwork.
