Exact same situation for me, except I'm waiting for a promotion. Keep the conversation going with your manager but do your best to be understanding. The priority for many companies right now is to save jobs, and that might mean no raises or promotions until Q3 or Q4. If that's unacceptable to you, or the workload is affecting your mental health, apply elsewhere. You might be surprised with what you can find. Good luck!
Thank you!
It’s tough, because similar things have happened to me in the past but being on the leadership side now I know there’s literally nothing I can do in this case. There’s no money right now. Asking your boss for money right now shows a limited understanding of the circumstances and puts them in an awkward position.
I don’t mean to sound super tough love but the people who shine during times like this are the ones who normally come out better on the other side. So you either suck it up and when things are better be prepared to make your case for more or come to your boss with solutions they make sense in the current climate to make things better. Can you bring on an intern, for example?
They didn’t even coninue our intern program this year so think that’s a long shot, but thank you for the wise words. I know in my heart what you’ve said above, I was just wrestling with feeling like a chump for working way above my pay grade with my desire to be a team player and do my part to see our agency through what’s going on - even if that means taking a hit in the short term. It’s not a great feeling but sometimes it is what it is. Always appreciate some tough love.
In the same position they’ve owed me a raise for a while now and I was supposed to get it this summer before they announced no raises or promotions for the rest of the year. I told my boss I understood and didn’t make a big deal about it. But as soon as hiring starts up again I’m out of there to get the money I deserve and if they can offer me something to keep me then great and if not then it’s just business.
I'm every bit the proponent of advocating for yourself, but timing does matter and for people in our industry the odds of improving both your short-term and long-term outcomes by pushing your employer at this exact moment in time feels as close to zero as it will ever be.
I’m in the exact same situation. It’s hard not to feel frustrated - and a little annoyed with myself for not just leaving earlier.
I guess I’m lucky in that way. My boss is an SVP and he’s very understanding about how I feel and the situation - there’s just nothing to be done, there is no money. Personally I’m not optimistic there will be raises and promotions until June 2021. I’ll go crazy waiting that long, so currently looking, but it’s a bad time for that.
Two levels higher? So you believe you’re operating at a Group Strategy Director level?
When you operate across multiple accounts with no oversight whatsoever, is that what you would call it? For context, there were people above me that were previously on these accounts but as they were either let go or quit, no one has moved over to replace them. They know I can do the work, so they let me - but now I feel I’m being taken advantage of b/c the agency continues to charge for those roles and my compensation has barely been impacted.
