Previously a transactional / advisory lawyer, now moving into a role where I'm doing contentious work. I find my drafting style isn't fitting right (square peg round hole).

Any tips on how to build the skills for things like letter writing so my stuff doesn't get completely rewritten?

Westlaw and Lexis will have examples, also, look up cases and “steal” writing from there. Don’t reinvent the wheel. You’ve got this.

Each person is different. I suggest looking at past letters by the same lawyer you’re drafting for and follow their tone, approach, and method.

For example, they may prefer 1-2 page letters with short, muscular sentences versus long, detailed letters with footnotes and exhibits. Either approach is okay in litigation—it’s a personal preference.

I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.
