Question as a (very new) partner. How do you, or how have you seen the following situation handled: I get business by attending conferences in a niche industry. Firm wants me to take others from the firm to the conferences where I’ve spent a few years developing relationships and I get origination for business I generate (of course a key metric for pay). By bringing others, it feels like I’m cannibalising my business by bringing them to the well. Is this a real issue or am I not a team player?

I would have the same concern if I were in your position. It sounds like other partners want to jump in on relationships you’ve been cultivating for years, benefit from your work without putting in the time, without your consent. This is one of those situations where you have to balance how much you like your firm and the other lawyers, ie is it a cutthroat kind of place or is it truly a family type place with good people, power dynamics, chances of you being screwed over, your other options, etc., and make the best decision you can.

you’re not a team player and are probably awful to work for as an associate…because you only care about your self. the evidence is that you’re asking this question in the first instance. if you are good at what you do and your relationships are legitimate, this would not be an issue.

likefunny

Difficult question. Pick the associate who goes with you carefully and steer (mentor) that person to meet peers (same age/position) at the conferences. You can work your peer group, and provide a bigger bench for your firm at the same time. I hope that if you get a client at X Company, your origins capture all the business from X Company. If not, time for a partners meeting.

If you’re an associate who has ever had the experience of a partner muscling in and claiming origination credit for a client you originated, you would know the answer. There are plenty of partners willing to screw you (and by extension your partnership chances) if it would put a little extra money in their pockets. And because they outrank you, you will certainly lose any battle with them.

Understood and yeah that’s certainly not a good look. I meant inviting other partners to a place where I generate business.

My SO adds very little to our relationship. She has a dead end job. I cook. I work. I oversee finances. I plan trips. She doesn’t have a voice in the relationship. I’ve asked her to give her perspective but she always defaults to mine bc she thinks I’m smarter/worldly. She feels intimated by me and my social circle. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking for her. Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F

At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.

Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
