You guys have odd policies in the US. No issues at all with international travel personal or work here in Canada. The drives are encrypted for a reason. You run into a problem just call your international numbers to report it. Hell, same policy applies when we take equipment into the US and one of those Border guys get pokey
It’s against policy to work overseas while traveling for personal reasons. You aren’t supposed to take your laptop when traveling outside of the US... pretty sure that was in the anti corruption / trade compliance training I took recently.
Deloitte Cyber here:. Taking your laptop international poses corporate espionage risks. Your cell although turned off can transmit data. Same with laptop. You leave it in hotel or Airbnb, someone can break in, grab data off PC, and you would never know they scanned it while not home. Okay bye.
PS: America has FBI to protect you, outside no FBI.
D3 ... Is your name Jon Snow by chance?
I take it so that if there’s an emergency and my team sends me our pre-organized “help” text then I can get online and help. I had to do this during a vacation a couple of years back and it saved us from potentially serious client incident when a team member of mine who was covering me ended up hospitalized. My laptop now comes everywhere.
Because some smart pants like you would then argue “why not use him?”
D5 I know you will have a cocky reply to that, please do us a favor and not subject us to it.
There might be some export agreement issues if for any reason someone got access to it
Everyone, look up project Olympic Games(Stuxnet). The CIA was able to get into remote Iranian nuclear facility rather easily.. even though it is not even connected to the internet. Don’t leave your laptop out of sight if you need to bring it. Foreign adversaries lie, cheat and steal whenever they get the option. Likely? No, but definitely possible and does happen. We are not the target, but our clients our. Especially public sector.
I feel like we just had a compliance training about this...
You need approval from project leadership to bring Deloitte devices internationally! Just in case of theft, loss, damage, etc.
OP! Don’t be an idiot. Laptop stays in America. At most, work phone will go, but that will be off majority of the time.
All of these answers look wrong. There are obviously implications, but I’ve never heard of a rule against it. Been doing this for years - my project teams usually expect it.
No such policy at KPMG. I have almost always taken it with me on personal international trip. I don’t hv to use it but comes handy when there is emergency
This is incorrect. While okay for most countries, it is prohibited for high risk countries
There are legal and tax implications. You also increase the risk of company assets loss - data
I did not read all the comments OP and not sure if you are on visa in the US. But one of the good reasons to do take your laptop is just in case you face challenges with your return due to immigration and your stay gets extended then you do have the option of working remote. Check with your team first and chat about this before you do it!
