Question for firms who have moved tax return preparation overseas: how has this process gone for you? Are you receiving good quality work products? Does the shift of preparation overseas free you up to focus more on your client’s needs? Or, are you finding that you are spending more time reviewing and managing workflow? Our firm is struggling with this transition.

I'm from India and it totally depends upon the people you work with. I've been working directly with MD's of a Top10 firm and it was great. You'd initially ofcourse send low and easy things to test the water. It's more of an experience and a long process. Happy to help, if you're looking for some resources in India including me! :)

It’s terrible and seriously jeopardizes the quality and quantity of work, 99% of the time, even after the resources have years of training and experiences by a variety of skilled US professionals and extensive investment of dollars and time. To qualify my response, know that I come from over 15 years of experience working with countless non-US teams and resources. To name a few issues: (1) Extensive rework by US resources, negating the desired/expected cost savings, causing even longer hours to meet deadlines and “fire drills”, requiring higher level US resources to do lower level work; (2) extensive time “eating” by US resources, negating the desired goal of US resources to focus on higher level work and bringing in more business, distorting and lowering utilization; (3) extensive morale issues by US resources, bringing on even more burnout, attrition, mental health issues, and much more on US resources; (4) extensive loss of qualified US resources in the long term due to lack of experience and training, contributing to degradation of the profession in the US… again, this is just to part of the list of issues it brings on, so much more comes to mind, but I’ll stop there. Good luck.

There's a lot of initial pain on the front end but once you have some good performers its worth it. No better feeling than forwarding a mess of info from client to India team at night and walking up to an organized file and tax return in great shape and pretty much ready to deliver. Really can make tax season a breeze in the right situation.

Also, I have an idea of what I should be compensated in this type of role, but any insights on how they pay compared to others would be helpful. Are you traveling during the pandemic or have client interactions been virtual? Lastly, if you are a consultant here, are you on billable hours? My current consulting role is not - so this would be new.

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

So I worked from home yesterday and my husband had a sneak peak on my meetings with clients (which I’m very new to being a senior). He mention that I should read some sales pitch books of some sorts so I can get a process down and not be drain from having genuine conversations with every client. I think it’s a great idea. Anyone have thoughts or recommendation?

I’m having trouble working in Tax. I’m overwhelmed and am feeling like I’m not producing my best work. I want to talk to someone at work about it but a) I don’t know who to go to and b) feel like it’s not worth it because there’s nothing that anyone can do but tell me to get a different job. I feel like I SHOULD say something to someone though, right? Idk. I’ve been on the job hunt for a while now and am not really having any luck, which is just adding to my despair. What should I do?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.
