I'm in my 40s, as well as a large portion of my team...as was my last office (heavy in the 40-60 age group). I haven't seen anything other than appreciation for the amount of knowledge/experience that age range provides to the rest of the team. Hope you experience the same!
I think the architecture field works pretty differently than marketing or creative teams. There's not as much emphasis placed on short lived trends and what's fashionable in the moment. There's greater concern for sustainability, best practices, and timeless design which I think lends itself more to appreciating the seasoned designers around. it's just a less trendy field in general
I’m 26 and considered a “young” professional. In the architecture industry age translates to skill and if you’re over 40 and are good at what you do, you probably would be a principal at a smaller firm or a senior architect in a bigger firm. Architecture is ageist, but inversely to what you said- it’s hard to break through if you’re young. Takes a lot of industry exposure and it’s way too steep of a learning curve. So if you’ve stuck around in the profession for so long and kept up with the trends, you’ll be definitely respected.
Architectural industry can definitely be ageist. Especially if you are a woman AND if you have children. There does seem to be a tipping point for when the ageism starts, which is probably early 40s.
Also depends on whether you are at a small/medium firm or a large national/international firm, and what city you're located in (corporate culture can vary even w/in a firm).
