3/23 Thread (General):
Starting a new job at Applied Materials on Monday as a Manufacturing Engineer III. I’ve been out of college for 5 years and all of my work experience till now has been in R&D for start ups and small businesses . So not only is this a new experience for me going into such a large company but also a industry (semiconductors). Does anybody has tips or advices on what I should expect as a new hire and how I can set myself up for success? Thanks!

Hi Folks,
Need opinions from experienced Management consulting folks:
Is it a wise decision to leave Deloitte USI Strategy practice for Accenture strategy in Capability Network when I am due for promotion to Engagement Manager?
I am getting 40% hike from Accenture CN when my promotional hike in Deloitte is expected from 25% to 30% (my guess).
What should I do? Renegotiate / Stay / Switch.

Sharing personal perspective:
Someone correctly said that the motto is work hard, party harder!
Few examples from what I have seen so far:
Case I: Planned and already communicated Client deliverable or for technology folks GO LIVE date is rarely (would say never) compromised on timelines and quality irrespective of n number of things going on project (be it too many new folks working, folks on leave , unavailability or anything).
Its not forced by PAM always, this habbit i think is inculcated among almost all ZSers! I have seen Consultants stepping down to hands-on work and getting delivered in these case.
So if your project has too many new folks or is seeing capacity crunch, work hours there would be long and no initiative is taken there
Case 2: In ZS, promotion system is fair , but its little different (atleast potrayed by everyone) - Perform/Do next hierarchy level work and then take promotion.
You have to first perform Consultant layer of work for at least 6-7 months to get promoted to Consultant from Associate Consultant.
So actually for that 6-7 months that folk is under the mental pressure of getting his AC job role done and also ramping up the learning of what a Consultant does! Work hours go up!
Its example of AC- C promotion, but valid across all levels
Case 3: Staffing on multiple projects. Ideal scenario folks get staffed for 4 hours daily in 2 projects. But in real life one project gets messed up or so or sometime both mess up and these kinds of folks end up doing above 11-12 hours.
Case 4: Complete offshore driven projects are more screwed in terms of WLB. Because they directly drive from offshore and folks have to take call after 10 pm also sometimes because not getting decisions from clients would mean a day wasted for next steps!
There can be many cases like these, but in these cases I have not seen anything significant done by leadership.
Also FYI - Managers only get concerned if hours on an average are above 10.5hours for a prolonged period of time.
10-10.5 average seems okayish and 9-10 is expected and would be said in multiple forums also that ZS this capability group’s average is this
Not paranoia. Have multiple offers, evaluating by knowing the organisation.
OP: I have moved from Mu Sigma to Zs and I have been very happy.
WLB is not great but I would say it’s still better than MU Sigma on an average.
Zs is a partnership firm and offers a great path to be a partner in future.
WLB and ZS don't go together, they make this very clear from the start. Even their motto is work hard and party harder.
If WLB is even a thing in your priority list, avoid ZS.
Rest, exposure wise and learning wise it's a good firm to go
Totally understandable! Seems everywhere in Consulting the problem and reason for it remains more or less the same.
Tbh ZS has some of the amazing perks across industry. However, you seriously need to figure out your priorities. If WLB is even a slight consideration then you have to skip ZS. Saying this from the point of view of having worked till 4 am at times when there’s a need and that did happen often in my project.
Pro : people are nice, you might end up with some friends for life like I have. Monetary benefits are too good. And finally, exposure is decent again depending upon from one project to another. If you land in a operation delivery project, growth will be stagnant. In Dev projects it’ll be high and fast paced. Exposure will primarily be towards pharma industry. So that’s that. Hope you’ll make a well informed decision:)
Just weighing pros and cons to take informed decision as mentioned.
Culture and Benefit definitely enable people to work more and for others WLB>anything else. So your comment definitely gives some perspective.
Thanks for your comment.
