I’d say a few things:
First, build both depth and breadth. Early in your career, expertise gives you credibility, but as you grow, what really sets you apart is understanding how the business fits together. Know how your function connects to finance, strategy, people — all of it. That’s what makes you a strategic partner, not just a subject-matter expert.
Second, lead with empathy and clarity. At senior levels, it’s not about having all the answers, it’s about creating space for others to bring their best thinking forward. The way you actively listen, communicate, and navigate complexity will shape how people trust and follow you.
And finally, get comfortable being uncomfortable. The stretch assignments, the uncertain moments, the big pivots, that’s where you really grow. Senior roles live in that space between structure and ambiguity, and your ability to stay steady there is what makes you effective.
In short — keep learning, stay curious, and widen your lens. The goal isn’t just to move up — it’s to make a broader impact.
