Visa and Mastercard are the most accepted globally, Discover and Amex can be very hit or miss.
Definitely recommend looking into the Venture X card as a CSR replacement. One of the best signup bonuses right now, no FTF, has rental car insurance, etc. (happy to provide a referral if interested)
The Schwab Debit card is probably my favorite when traveling internationally because they reimburse all ATM fees and don't charge a separate fee for international cash withdrawals.
Schwab is currently is what I used for three months in Barcelona studying abroad - they pay you back for every withdrawal fee from an ATM & is accepted pretty much everywhere.
Found discover not as much. Got a chase sapphire card to have a visa with no transaction fees for international travel.
Rising Star
Not accepted in many Asian countries.
Not sure if this is the case for the rest of Asia but Japan is still very much a cash based society.
My GM Mastercard has no foreign transaction fee. Even though I have no plans to buy a GM product anytime soon, I keep the card because I do travel internationally every couple of years.
They also include some trip cancellation insurance if you pay for the trip with the card.
