Interview process is irrelevant to the offer imo. I would reach out to the recruiter or whoever you disclosed your range to and ask what happened and give them a concrete number that if presented you will sign. Take the back and forth out of it and say if you can get to X I will sign today. If this is your best and final, consider this a decline. No fluff and straight to the point. They will appreciate that and be able to take that number to whoever is approving offers and starting to play time wasting games.

Just a guess, but it sounds like a ploy to get you in at the very bottom of your stated range. No company wants to pay more than they have to. I can't imagine that they would rescind their offer completely if you were to remind them of your bottom-end of the range that you gave, and they may or may not come up.
Where did the number come into the conversation prior? My understanding, and please anybody tell me if I’m incorrect, is the hiring manager approves because they have the budget. In my recent experiences twice I’ve been told by the HR person and a hiring manager that they could increase The dollars by $10,000, on the spot. Just to start to get me through the process.
I would definitely ask where the miscommunication came in and if they can meet your number, reminding them of what you bring to the table and how you will impact the role.
Makes you wonder why they even ask when you first start talking. The idea is that it saves them and me a lot of time to see if we are in the same range. I would say I appreciate the offer, and based on skills/research/etc. that I bring to the role, I was expecting something closer to *range*
You should definitely try to ask if they could meet you closer at your desired range

I would recommend negotiating verbally to see if there is flex and to convey your expectations. It sounds like q good for so I think very worth it to try
