Wow you’re actually in a position where you can make your decision based on culture and fit. A few other factors I would consider: average attractiveness of people in each office, do you like the letter M or B more, are you willing to answer the question of what BCG stands for, which one will best support your exit to POTUS, preferred color/font scheme for decks. This is why I work at EY...
We fly first class on flights above 1.5 hours
McK 3 hours
OP, if your gut is telling you BCG you should go. I had both offers, I have really good friends in both firms, and I would be happy in either setting. You can't make a wrong choice
Strategy&2: Stop the madness then. You are wrong.
^ mck1, why?
A2, relevance?
A1, answering C1’s question
Op, how did you do that?
McK1, makes sense. I’ve heard similar things from friends, so was curious to hear your take. Consistent with what I was getting at in my earlier post too
Regional staffing (e.g., west coast, south) - you can get on international / cross region projects but requires a bit of networking
BCG has very strict up or out and regularly prunes staff. McKinsey has relaxed its policies and started allowing more time to be ready for next level.
Culture and people - ultimately this is a people business and your success depends on how you get along with folks at either firm. I think McK is a great company, but the entire sell McK experience felt more transactional, folks at bcg felt more authentic
I had this exact decision to make when I joined as an associate. I was trying to fit a line that just didn’t exist and stressed more about the decision than was truly required. I obviously chose McKinsey and did so for the people, opportunities, culture of local office, training focus within the Ops practice, and vets community. In hindsight, the “strengths based” achievement model works very well with my personality and I’ve found that my friends who went to BCG aren’t as happy. Just my $0.02
Breakdown of my Biz Ops team (also tech) - 40% McK, 20% BCG, 10% Bain, 30% boutique or non-consulting. That said, I’d go with culture fit.
^ Seems broadly proportional to the sizes of each firm
Our travel policies are very flexible. Probably too flexible. Unless you do something truly stupid, unlikely to get any pushback on expenses
I'd be interested to hear what you all would pick and why?
Where are you jumping from?
The Boston Consulting Group.
Just go w local office culture and fit, seriously. McK is such a large place nowadays that the office you’re going to matters quite a bit.
Who owns the practice you report to and are they out of that office. It helps.
