Yeah they lie all the time about the work in order to get the hire they want. I was lied to by leadership about how much analysis and research work they do. I was told that I could be on one of those teams and it would be the exact work I was looking to do. Except that it was all a lie. I’m on a team that was a dumpster fire when I joined. No analysis work at all. They were just desperate for someone with my background to come in and fix it all.
Needless to say I fixed it all. Now I’m actively on the job market. I don’t like being lied to.
Sorry to hear that. Thanks for your response it looks like I'll be right there with you soon. I suppose the business model is high churn so this is still an adaptive strategy for them.
Sadly a common story. Much in the same way they’ll bend the truth/lie to win work, it’s the same in hiring.
All I can say is if you’re trying to make the best of a bad situation, can you lead the company into growing in this field - start attending conferences/producing white papers etc. If it was talked about in process they must have some awareness/presence of the space already, so maybe a small foothold to jump from. If they have no desire to support you with this then they truly did just lie to you.
If it’s a case of moving on then just some advice for next time. I’d recommend trying to connect with peers/junior staff outside of the formal process, independently of their HR/hiring teams. You might get a clearer view of what’s actually going on there, rather than the sales pitch.
Great points, I'll try to reframe this and pursue some growth opportunities over the next year.
How does someone get experience in something cutting edge. By definition.
SLs have their bread and butter projects that keep the lights on and then periodically “cutting edge” projects. No one has experience in cutting edge since it’s the first time it’s being done. They just figure it out.
That makes sense.
I’d be less pessimistic and not think of it as downright lying. It’s likely more so the aspirations of the type of work they are pursuing and not winning yet. You could pioneer and help drive those types of projects by putting in BD and identifying pipeline so that the team starts to build foundational knowledge.
But that’s just me. It always takes someone going outside the comfort zone to break new ground
It’s everywhere lol
Rising Star
Last year I was hired by a company that promised me exposure to some specific work streams I was interested in, but something similar to “hopefully you can get to that when you finish all this other stuff we have for you” was my reality. I never got to work on what I wanted after over a year. Tired of wasting my time and moving on now.
