I don't agree. How would you introduce yourself? I am actually proud of what I do and don't see a reason for under playing what I do.
Please everyone stop with the doctor for companies line. Everyone is laughing at you. Seriously if you're at my party and someone asks what you do and you take any longer than 15 seconds to explain it OR you compare yourself to something virtuous like a doctor, you should go home and do some thinking.
I don't understand what's "douchy" and why you need to "downplay"?! Let's be honest- management consulting is not the most prestigious of professions - at least not any more! If anything, we are pretty mediocre, regardless of where we belong - MBB, RB ATK or Big 4, etc.. The fact that people here think it's douchy implies that you feel the profession has got cache to it. I work at the Big 4 and command top end manager salary, but every man and his dog in my neighborhood makes more than me and has a better quality of life. They work less and some don't work!!!
D1- I agree that it all depends on the social setting. But when the profession gets mentioned, I don't try to downplay it.
Bain- Mitt Romney
I say the firm name and if they want more details it's on them.
I like d1. Except. Or couldn't make it but didn't want to do finance! Did take lsats though! Then decided I didn't want to be a drunk.
I like the simplicity of this, @EY5
Lol what else do you say you are
Talking about careers in a social setting seems a bit trite anyway, doesn't it?
I say I am an ex professional scuba diver
I just say growth strategy
@BCG1, we hired someone with a DBA?
I use "I do Contract Work, sometimes for Governments, sometimes for Private Organizations." It can sometimes lead to some interesting assumptions!
I'm a doctor for companies is what I usually open with
If I say I work at PwC, most people outside of clients or work circles don't know what that is. If they ask, "What's that?" and I say Price Waterhouse, they immediately go to the Oscars. When I worked at Booz Allen it was, "Oh, government contractor." Generally I stick with Consultant and refer to Office Space.
Booz Allen- Edward Snowden
PWC- oscars
We're all drunks, hon
"I'm a prat time harmonica repair man". Works most of the time every time.
@D1 Almost all fields exist to help people, otherwise it'd be a hobby, not a profession. It just sounds douchey because it is an inaccurate and somewhat patronizing response.
I prefer conSLUTant
