I got hired partially because of my personality. I don't hide it. It's more fun being myself on and around my teams.
Life is too short to be serious, this job is stressful enough. If my life ends tomorrow, I’d rather be known as the guy who made everyone else a little more cheerful, rather than a guy who made good powerpoint slides
Let the goofiness fly. Life is too short to be serious all the time. Just...dont do it in front of client execs that you have no relationship with.
What does this even mean? Be yourself, don't harass anyone.
I am Asian male. I only let loose.
Kinda depends on workload to be honest. If there really isn’t that much going on then I like to goof around a lot.
Let loose. I’m known to be a goofball and prankster, and I use my humor to my advantage to keep the team together and engaged (and to give them permission to be themselves in the face of tough/stressful situations). Plus, not being our authentic selves where we spend the vast majority of our daily hours is just plain exhausting.
Same here. The kids, err... younger consultants occasionally think I might be insane. However we all have a great time. Our projects are stressful enough, we have to find some fun!
Using “asian” as a classification in this context is vague and not MECE. Classification wise, it is not similar to “white privilege”. What kind of asian are you?
I’m naturally a very bubbly person and personally live by “work hard, play hard” motto. Have fun, but get your shit done. With that being said, on my last engagement I was free to be myself. We worked our asses off but we always had fun. My current engagement, that behavior is seen as “goofy” or “silly” and is very frowned upon by the engagement manager. I think it really depends on the personalities of the engagement leadership and team TBH.
I think it’s about reading the room and the situation. In a client meeting, I’m pulled together and professional. With my team, pretty goofy when we’re socializing but I can get down to business, too. I fully believe in being you at work. 1/3+ of your day is spent at work. That’s too much time to pretend to be someone else.
8+ depending on the day 🤷🏼♀️.
Lmao brother man I feel you I’m the biggest clown I know and I think my colleagues enjoy it
I went to predominately white schools as a kid, with only three Asian guys in my entire graduating class of 500+. All three of those guys were insanely stoic around teachers and people they didn’t know, and then turn into some of the goofiest dudes you can imagine. One of them was basically a Korean Steve Stiffler. Just constant entertainment.
It wasn’t until college that I realized this wasn’t necessarily true of all Asians. I was disappointed to say the least.
Asian stoic here until I get comfortable with the team then full on goof
Stay in consulting long enough to see yourself become the villain
As a male, I think you can let loose a little. As a female, not so much.
Thanks M2 for the clarification. Appreciate you sharing your experience/perspective
Unleash the dragon
Or Indian Peacock
Go to a firm that will appreciate you.
Which firm has a fun culture? I'd imagine boutiques would, including design firms
Get your goofiness out by doing improv outside of work; take a class
Post was not meant to be racial at all, just describing my specific circumstance. More looking for feedback from the sillier people in this profession and how they manage it as well as the experience from people who clown it up
I strictly limit the “my banana is a phone and I’m on a call” bit to no more than 4 times per day. So far, so good.
