Given that it is effective July 1, does that mean the effective raise is just half for this year ($5k / $10k over the next 6 months) or will this be trued up back to Jan 1 so that we see the full $10k / $20k for this calendar year?

What do we think this means for summer bonuses? The scale increase is less than those were last year…

likefunny

I suspect summer bonuses will stay or be absorbed into year end bonuses. Total comp, including bonus, always goes up.

10K chump change got the juniors feening. 20 is just scratching the surface.

like

Over the past decade, the median increase by class year is:

$10k
$10k
$10k
$20k
$30k
$30
$35k
$35k

So yes the more senior classes have historically gotten larger gross raises. After multiple rounds of this that’s part of why there is such an extreme jump in comp from the junior levels - it used to be more compressed.

How much is that across paycheck? I’m a 2021 but these raises are negligible. Give me the fat bonus instead!!

like

General rule of thumb: every $20k = $1k/month after taxes. Subject to deductions, taxes, etc.

Does anyone think it’s weird that my firm is bending over backwards to try to keep a first year staff from leaving the firm after she was rated a 2 this year. But now she’s trying to leave and they keep trying to push her to stay saying she can be a partner in 8-9 years and laying it all out in detail. The issue is they laid off other staff (all but her) so maybe that’s it? Find it very odd.

When do you think associates are usually let go in small practice groups that are currently being overwhelmed with work? Is it when it starts to slows down or when they already have a candidate to replace you? Just trying to figure out how long I have after annoying a partner 😂.

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
