Scenario: 3 YOE, leaving BCG at pre-PL, exclusive focus on healthcare during tenure. What roles/seniority would I be looking at, in general? Trying to figure out in what roles/functions the consulting skill set is valuable, but also where I’m not stuck in a “strategy”/“PMO” type role with no specific functional knowledge building and accountability over the years

3 YOE means you’re 25, right?

All the ex consultants seem to land in the stuck strategy PMO part. They always hire us to help them PMO a special project where the PL teams ignore them. I too am interested in your question but don’t hold out too much hope.

What does pre-PL mean? Associate or Consultant?

Saying pre-PL is like saying in between jobs. Just avoiding calling him/herself a consultant :).

Maybe something in Marketing/Sales in a Life Sciences corporation?

Unfortunately, we don't have much functional knowledge from a hiring standpoint, esp. pre-P level. If you're interested in pharma, have seen some people land in commercial (as someone mentioned above). Another path is to start in strategy or BD (BD more likely in small biotech) and shift to a functional area over time. Seniority-wise, AD is pretty typical, D maybe if you have pre-BCG experience or relevant degrees (like MD).

Should add, this is for the post-MBA or ADC crowd. Not sure if you're neither.

OP, from what I heard from a friend who works at a reputable HC boutique consulting firm, the seniority varies greatly. Are you focused on payer or pharma experience?

If the latter, then from what my friend said, I’d imagine larger biotechs are hard to break into, especially at the more senior levels, both given background and pre-MBA status (even if you’re at the post-MBA level, you haven’t been there long enough to make up for it). You could probably land senior manager/maybe associate director at smaller companies or startups where you’re at (i.e., post MBA title without MBA).

Friends and fam in pharma have mentioned that some post graduate degree was helpful (if not softly required) in the field, whether MBA or MD or PhD, depending on the function. For science-facing divisions, you definitely need a PhD.

I’ve heard businessy roles could be in biz dev, strategy, or corp dev - but to be fair the folks I know from my firm (also MBB) who left for biotech and pharma near your tenure generally were solving for those depts from the get-go and therefore didn’t even consider PMO style roles. Over time, they shifted into functional areas. From my firm, those who landed those roles did have DD experience and MBAs, FWIW.

Join sales ops or supply chain ops or join a company where strategy is more centralized vs in individual BUs. If power is in BUs, central strategy group is usually (not always) PMO-ish.

So far I received offers from PwC India, Capgemini and Lexmark for Data Engineering.

More are in pipeline from KPMG GS, TechM, Accenture.

But one peculiar thing is happening. I have appeared for 4 Cognizant interviews but in all I have been rejected. Whereas most of my friends had easily cleared Cognizant. I am switching tech, so I am a bit concerned like whether my knowledge is too shallow😐
