Got an offer from KPMG for a 20% bump today 🎉
I got contacted by an external headhunter for a Director of R&D Strategy & Operations role at a really big pharma company. It seemed legit super interesting and according to him they were really excited (remember I haven’t done any pushing or reach out - I’m not actively looking at all, I’m just chillin). Someone reaches out Thursday evening at like 8pm requesting an interview and can we talk next week. So I send over a wide option of time options (3-4 hour slots per day I can make work each day the following week) first thing Fri morning at 7am.
Of the four hours of available time I gave on Monday, this person (with the head hunter and her boss on cc during all of this - don’t ask me why), manages to send an email back at like 7pm on Friday saying that 10:30am - literally one of the only time I hadn’t given - works great and she’ll send an invite. Worse, when the invite comes through a few minutes later it’s for 10:30pm on Monday (this is all the immediate next Monday after the weekend by the way).
So now here I am stuck at 7:30pm now on a Friday with an interview on Monday morning during a client call that I can’t attend, and a calendar invite at 10:30pm, and an interviewer (who would be a peer in my new group) that to this point has been strangely non communicative until the very last minute on things.
So I send a very nice quick note “Hey X, sorry to bother you so late on a Friday. Just to confirm – do you mean 10:30am Monday? I think the calendar invite that just came through is for 10:30pm.
I’m happy to do 10:30am if you like, though I’ll need to move something to make that work. Any chance we could do one of the other slots below? Otherwise I’m happy to see if I can move my conflict.”
Person moves the invite, then responds to my email and insists I’m wrong and the invite is for the correct time and that’s what time the interview is but then offers an alternative time if I’d prefer (that is within the window of original times I gave).
I immediately sat there thinking “I don’t need an interview - if you can’t admit you made a small mistake in reading an email and sending something for the wrong time (something we’ve all totally done) without trying to blame me for it then I definitely don’t want to work here”. Red flags everywhere. We talked Monday and then I ran.
Unbelievable incompetence or arrogance or a combination of the two? There should be a recruiter rating board that lists recruiters by name and a star rating provided by the interviewee with a description of their experiences. Will be hard as vindictive feedback is more prevalent online given anonymity but worth a shot?
1 times might be not a big deal. But “2” is plural number. Unprofessional! Thanks for calling names. I’ll stay away
Agreed one time is possible for urgent items to crop up but twice!!!!! speaks volumes for what kind of boss / leader you will be working for.
That said, in McK1’s case inability to show humility / create an experience that I own your fate isn’t reflecting well on the org culture either and frankly is down right scary.
I had read in articles that people should choose their bosses carefully and now this personal experience solidifies that message.
