Serious question. Some Incompetent people BS around to move up or get people trust. What will the future look like? Like to hear some thoughts.

Most people like this don’t make it for very long. Eventually you get caught out or people just stop covering for you.

Ah yes, I’ve come across this before and the individual would refer to it up as team work or being a team player. This person I had an experience with was always avoiding doing the real work, but then wanted to take the credit for it. Annoying. All politics. 😑

like

No, partners usually don’t see it, and if they do see it and people around that person are doing the work, he’ll chalk it up to that being good management and “getting your work done through others.” It is a very manipulative skillset, and people make it all the way to partner and beyond with that technique.

They usually throw the people who refuse to do their work under the bus or start planting sob stories in the partners ears early on that they’re trying to be good team workers and this big bad person won’t work with them. They build upward leadership relationships only and early on to activate on demand.

Partners believe it, and then the good employee either leaves and the team is fired from the client. Otherwise that good employee stays and gets bullied into doing all the work.

Some people talk like they know everything but they actually don’t. People are nice enough to trust them with their capability but in the background, they’re asking other for help on the thing that they’re bragging about. What their future would look like when the more they go up, the more responsibility and job complexity that they have to deal with. Are they just going to keep asking others for help?

Sorry. I’d like to stay as general as possible.

Hopefully, SM1, hopefully. People do eventually tire of being used and then the principle of “enough rope” kicks in if you’re lucky

like

I know this happens but it’s the minority case in my experience.

You just have to move around too much and perform in too many contexts for people to consistently make partner this way. I’ve had people like this on teams and it’s pretty transparent - and I just straight up roll them off. Ain’t anybody got time for that.

If you get repeatedly fucked by no-nothing douches, at some point you have to stop blaming them and ask: what should I have done differently? Why am I so susceptible to the machinations of incapable people? It is not enough to be smart and capable. You also have to have interpersonal skills, and part of that is understanding the weaknesses of others and anticipating how those weaknesses manifest themselves. Stop pretending to be powerless... You CAN outsmart the douches; forgive them and find a way around them.

like

Slalom Ithink we can see it. This job isn’t supposed to be a battle of wits to see who can outsmart who. We are trying to focus on delivering quality solutions to clients and making a difference in the world—not winning a mindgame with some douche.
Besides, why would someone decent think like someone dishonest in order to outwit him? The answer isn’t to stoop to their level.
Partners need to open their eyes. They can’t all be so lonely they take the side of the suck ups to the detriment of their own business.

Well we are trusted advisors. This skill is something all of use should work on to attain. Doesn’t matter how good the work is if the client doesn’t perceive it to be great.

SrC1... I never suggested stooping to others' level. What I did suggest is that getting annoyed or despondent at others' poor behavior is not productive. What is productive is understanding that, while you may not be able to prevent others' poor behavior, you can certainly work to anticipate it and mitigate it. Stop playing the victim, you're better than that.
