Why would it be illegal? They aren’t forcing you to apply.

Other reason to record, SA, is for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and use closed captioning software. That software relies on the recording feature. I know because when I requested that accommodation myself I learned there was no accommodation that did not announce to all listeners that recording was occurring. Alternative option was to have a human transcriptionist (think: interpretor) join me for every video call. Both options suck.
No. They cannot force you to record.

No they can’t record without consent. Their options are 1, interview without recording or 2, don’t interview and remove the candidate from consideration. They don’t have to interview you if they don’t feel like it.
It’s illegal. Here’s reference.
“Generally, employers are not allowed to listen to or record conversations of their employees without the consent of the parties involved. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) allows employers to listen in on business calls, but are not allowed to record conversations.”

Of course it’s legal, they use those also to review your responses following the interview sessions especially if you’re on the brink. They can’t force you but they can request it. Not sure why this would be a problem for most
In general (unless there is a weird state law about this), they can ask whatever they want as long as his refusal can’t be tied back to a protected class (like a disability), they can just not offer him to move forward and it is perfectly legal.
Probably so others can review the interview at their own time without having to do a real time interview. That’s just a wild guess. Could be to improve the interviewers skill. Most of the reasons are not nefarious at all I assure you no big 4 back office is well run enough to build some kind of Orwellian profile on your friend.

Why does he care if he gets recorded?
P1 since it isn’t me, I can’t tell you why the person doesn’t want to be recorded. But if it were me, I would l’ve also requested the same, just because I don’t feel comfortable knowing I’m on tape. Do we have to have a justification for not feeling comfortable with something?
Sometimes it's so the interviewee can't claim discrimination, lately it's also been because people have hired out their interview process to someone else. If they're not recorded it's a major pain fire them when someone different shows up to work. Doubly so if everything is remote.
Don't be surprised when this becomes standard practice. It's starting to be a real problem.
Hiring someone to do your remote interviews for you.
For anyone curious what I'm talking about as the reason.

At IBM interviews we ask for an ID to be shown during the interview as this exact impostor thing happened too many times.
It’s illegal in many states including New York and California. Speak to a lawyer
It’s the same.
If Op is now rejected they have full claim to wages from the lost job for an indefinite period of time.
Since the pandemic.

Probably is fine legally, it’s just really f’ing weird.
Should just say being photographed is a sin in their religion and they try to avoid it if possible lol
